That's a great sign then, no?
I think Dooley's best case scenario is 9-3 with a bowl win followed by a mediocre season next year that leads to his termination.
I do not think that is the best case for this year. I think your prediction about a "mediocre" season depends on the definition of "mediocre".
THIS is the make or break year. Either he proves he can coach or he proves he can't. If he gets 10 wins this year and is competitive in the other games then there will be more than enough coming back on both sides of the ball for him to continue building. If this is an 8 win season with the talent he has with no wins over top tier opponents... then it takes a miracle to save him in '13.
8-4 should get him fired this year.
I think that if he saves his job, he's gone after next year with a tougher schedule and losing the passing game.
Losing the passing game? Someone hasn't kept up with recruiting much and is just throwing out a blanket prediction without looking at personell. We signed the 2nd ranked recruiting class at wr in the '12 cycle, along with a qb who many think is the best qb we've had on campus since Peyton. Our passing game is going to be fine.
Also, please explain why, at 8-4, they should fire Dooley. That's a vast improvement over the last 3 seasons and would tell me that the state of the program is improving.
I didn't say we won't be able to find someone to play quarterback. The passing game is going to take a step back.
8-4 tells me Dooley is never going to get it done.
How does that tell you this? 8-4 means we won every game we were expected to win, and won almost every game that people consider a "toss up". Hopefully it also means that we were competitive in the games we lose. So how does that tell you that "Dooley is never going to get it done"? Or are you just throwing out random words without actually thinking it through?
In the end, it doesn't really matter what you or I think, since the decision will ride with Dave Hart. But to say showing signs of the program turning the corner is going to get the coach fired is just setting yourself up to eat crow when the season is over.
