Joey Galloway speaking sense (for once)

If you're the better team, at home, you don't lose. You don't even need to be in a position to squeak by on a walk-off field goal when you have one of the best home field advantages in the sport. When we came out with hair on fire and jumped on them 21-7 - that's when the rout should have been on. We aren't there yet. I'm ok with recognizing progress and appreciating how far we had to come to this point. But nothing about Saturday's result feels good, except the fact that we finally have a competent QB. Hopefully Josh fully trusts him now. The defense is not going to win games for us this year.

Agree for now …. Oregon seems like they come out the gate on fire Until they face a stiff big 10 Defense then they fold
Well, they only face one potentially stiff defense through the entire regular season: Penn State in two weeks. The Ducks make it through that day, and they have the all-too-typical B10 soft underbelly cake walk season the rest of the year: Oregon State, Indiana, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, USCw, and Washington. If that sounds a lot like Vandy, Vandy, Vandy, Vandy, Vandy, Vandy, and Vandy to you, well, that's because that's about right.

So yeah, Oregon is the sole Power 4 team I can imagine going undefeated through the regular season. Well, I take that back. Ohio State could, too. Their only remaining challenges are Penn State and Michigan.

Go Vols!

Wrong, CBO. The better team does sometimes lose. Every team _can_ lose. Know how many undefeated seasons the most successful college football coach of all time (Saban) had? Two. He was head coach for 28 seasons, with the best rosters money could buy, and only two of those he got through unscathed.

We can be the legitimately best team in the SEC and we're still gonna have games like we had Saturday. Even once we're championship caliber (I think we're getting very, very close to that), our floor each season will be 8-4, with a ceiling of 12-0. That's just life in the SEC. You can be the bubba at the very top, but those other two or three bubbas just a hair lower than you on the hilltop, they're going to beat you sometimes.

That's football. That's just how it goes.

Losses never feel good. I'm with you there. But don't expect the impossible. You'll just turn yourself into a crybaby over and over.

Go Vols!

the result does not feel good at all but if you can’t take away some positives from the game then I don’t know what to tell ya

Ok, the positive is the offense - it looks plenty good enough to win with. The defense is my main concern and yes I'm well aware of the injuries. If we can't win at home after leading 21-7, we could be in trouble on the road and at home if the offense struggles.

Florida is a dumpster fire and bama beat a terrible Wisconsin team, big deal. Not worried. Oklahoma will be our toughest left
LMAO.....Enlighten me the last time we beat Florida in Gainesville and Bama in Tuscaloosa? Two years ago under Billy, Florida finished 5-7 and missed a bowl game but they beat our ass. Go ahead and put them down as wins....Bet your house on it too.

Well the D was struggling for multiple reasons and if we were not playing the #5 team in the country, now ranked higher, we may could have won with a 21-7 lead.
I am confident Banks and Heuple are working on what's fixable with the D. And as you said about the injuries, playing freshman D backs was unfortunate for this game. GA took full advantage of it like a good coaching staff does. Have confidence going forward.

Just out of curiosity, will a similar miracle need to happen on Georgia's defense for them to make the SECCG?
As long as they keep winning...no. If you give up a lot of yards you need to win. They did....we didn't. Do you think their defense will finish out the year higher or lower ranked than us?

With Texas being a mess right now, UGA looks like they have a more favorable schedule than UT does. If they beat Bama, who they get at home they then have Ole Miss and Texas at home. The survived their biggest threat Saturday. There is a good chance they run the table, but it will be tough. I don't think they have to worry about their usual screw up with UK.

TN is not a #15 team. If they stay focused, improve like they should (even by reps alone) and take care of their own business - they're a playoff team. One I wouldn't relish facing if they make it. But #15? That isn't what I watched on Saturday.
We played well and should have won. Everyone knows that. We will climb the ranks as the continue to run through this SEC schedule. December, we'll be right where we need to be.

I don't think it matters all that much. All we need to do is win ball games, just like they do.

That’s a rational take by Galloway. We had our chance to win and looked like the better team at certain points of the game. The fact is Georgia was still favored to win that game in Neyland and we were a missed fg away from winning with both our starting CBs out and some DL starters out. Once our defense gets healthy, IF they get healthy, I think this is an SEC championship caliber team and certainly a playoff caliber team. Injuries are a concern right now and if that doesn’t improve then we’re going to probably lose a couple more close games. That’s just bad luck but it can happen to any team any given year.

So NOTHING felt good about Saturday? How do you enjoy any game? It was exciting in the extreme. The crowd was in it and for the first time in a long time, UT punched back when they got smacked in the mouth. We do not have the roster the UGA has, but we were on equal footing. Had at least one of the injured DBs been there, I truly believe they would not have scored two of their TDs. The end of the game became chaotic and that ultimately got in the head of our kicker. When was the last time you actually legitimately felt we were more than just in the game up until the last second?

It was a very enjoyable game right up until the false start, then missed kick. I'm very happy with Heupel and the progress made. To lose that game at home after outplaying Georgia is very disheartening. Sorry if that makes some people upset. Onward we go.

You do realize we’re down our top 2 corners and two of our top Dlineman? I’m just glad both lines weren’t manhandled

Yes, of course. We have problems at each level of the defense. The LBs are just adequate and they are full strength. The DL is ok, the secondary is a mess. I'm not sure we get McCoy back as everyone seems to think, at least not the McCoy we saw last season. Hopefully everyone that has played so far this season improves significantly.

I normally can’t stand Galloway but he has a good take here. Just my opinion here but I think we’re gonna be just fine and see us making a run to the Sec title game. Hopefully more

This is true, or if they held on 4th and long with less than 3 minutes left, or perhaps if they had stopped Georgia in OT… reality is we had 3 chances to put them away. I think most of that is a depth issue still, as we were starting Freshman in place of injured starters. Either that or the others were busts. I think that is the next place we need to be looking. Regardless, I’m proud of our guys and progress is progress.

While we are clearly having some defensive issues, I think it is worth pointing out that Arion Carter currently leads the SEC in tackles and Joshua Josephs leads the SEC in sacks. We also lead the SEC as a team in sacks.

By time we play Florida their fans will be ready for basketball season and half of their players will be looking at their winter portal options. Unless they make a major turnaround I am not nearly as concerned about that game as I was a month ago.

A miracle has to happen on defense before this team makes the SECCG. An I hope Joey A performs in his first road game in the SEC like UGAs QB did.
Maybe getting two of out top 4 DTs back and out two best corners back could be that miracle…hopefully have the DTs by the first of October but not sure about the corners…
