IMO, A perspective coach will look at the talent already in place and be impressed. I see less than 10 players currently playing that UT will miss next year, if all of the non seniors return. A new regime could easily turn this team around in one season, because the veteran talent will be in place.

This is the most relevant post on this entire forum right now. If Butch really is on his way out and we make a big hire we could be heading for a generation of top tier talent. And with that the chance at some real hardware.

Agreed. We'll need a coach with an established name to keep out Kirby, Dabo, and other big name coaches poaching talent from this state. I don't believe recruits would put faith in another MAC hire.

1. The Nashville area has changed the once weak perception of in state talent.
2. If the powers that be would just pull the trigger now, there would be a chance to salvage the current roster and current commits.

D4H is right about this in concept. We are in a far different position than when we settled for Dooley and then Jones. I'll give Butch credit for making us attractive from a talent standpoint.
This was discussed in a thread or 2 during Jones first year. Was BJ just the guy to get us to the Championship coach. Looks that way atp.

Agreed, the ONLY question is will the PILOT of the new hiring be willing to hire someone who is capable of FULLY controlling OUR program. Until convinced of this, I am not optimistic the new hire will someone of that caliber

We have a different mentality already. Curry was not involved in the past searches. Will the donors get Currie the blank check he needs to get the best coach in here??

Are you like 12 yrs old? You do realize prior to Derek Doolaid that the previous 85 yrs Tennessee was the winningest College football program in the country?!!! Yes all the way back to 1925!

The schedule is and always had and always will be tough but UT is a stalwart in college football always has and always will be!! Get the right coach again and we will be right back on top!

I disagree. There is talent on the team but not a lot of elite talent. How many of our players could start at Georgia or Alabama. We do not have anywhere near the talent of these two teams.

More than are currently starting for us.

Butch Jones keeps most of our best players on the bench. See Daniel Bituli.

You guys overestimate the gap in talent between teams in the SEC. Most of the top recruiting teams have similar top end talent. The major difference is DEPTH.

Alabama is Alabama because they can withstand injuries and the wear and tear of a football season better than anybody else. That along with a great head coach is why they are in the hunt every year.

If you look at the NFL, you'll see LSU has the most players in the league right now. The reason they haven't won a national title since 2007 isn't because of a lack of talent or depth. Its been inferior coaching. Give Nick Saban the teams Les Miles had the last 10 years and he still wins 4 national championships.

Depth + elite coaching >>> top end talent (in college football)

From 1973-1986 we had... wait for it....one 9 win season. Believe me I love the VOLS as much as you...my blood is orange and I want the best coach possible, but even in our best most recent history (Fulmer era) he finished 2nd or worst in the SEC East 11 times. Let us all pray we get the next great coach in college football and enjoy an era of something at least approaching greatness.
