Joey Aguilar-The anti Nico

I’m just glad this whole thing is closed out. No idea if we will be a net positive on the field with our qb room but we have good competition. Now that this is settled we need to close portal out addressing needs. Get the roster set, and let’s go!
This thing won’t be settled until a few games are played this fall. I’m looking forward to watching the action this fall.

I watched his Clemson film on YouTube. He did not look very sharp but he definitely has experience running away from defenders and the body weight to take the power 5 punishment. These are important factors. and the problem with throwing freshman into the SEC fire. Glad to see the 3rd body in the QB room. We could use another.
His WRs and OL sucked. Not exactly a fair comparison.

Clemson heard all week about how they needed to be on upset alert bc App always comes in and beats these P4 teams. Clemson was CFP team and was motivated. Nobody on APP looked good. It wasn’t apples to apples.

Joey is the anti Nico in many ways

1. One was a five-star prospect with a sense of entitlement and the other had to start at juco

2. One is undoubtedly more gifted and relies on those gifts so missing practice isn't a big deal. One had to scrape and claw for everything

3. One plays overly cautious and the other slings the tater and lets his guy makes plays

4. One is a quiet presence in the locker room and the other is a leader of men

5. One still has a massive chip on his shoulder, and I expect Joey to ball out this year!!!

I'm going to throw this stat out there too

Games throwing 200+
Nico 5/13
Joey 25/26-The only game he didn't throw for 200 was his very first

Of all the five star qbs in Nico's class, maybe one or two is still on the same team they originally signed with. In the era of the transfer portal and NIL, high school rankings are becoming largely irrelevant. JA may not be the answer but his last two seasons have been much better statistically, even with the 10 interceptions, than most D1 qbs playing in a moderately difficult conference regardless of ranking

Joey was not good enough for a 5-7 UCLA team. Instead, they knowingly "traded" him out for a kid and his camp who tried to extort a school by refusing to practice and attempting to hold out for more money, along with any other circus antics behind the scenes.

That should tell you everything you need to know.

Hooker wasn’t good enough for a terrible VT team….sometimes its just the player doesn’t match the coach or the team’s playing style.

Everybody brings up Hooker like he is the norm. It happened ONCE for us, immediately followed by transfer Joe Milton who was not that great. How many teams are out there bragging about their transfers that ended up not working out?

I don't know what to think about the new QB. Is he below average because he came from a lower tier team with not as much talent so he won't be able to rise to the challenge? Or is he above average and can play with the talent surrounding him because coach Hype saw what he can do and knows he will be a good fit. I think MOST people are hopeful that at least he will be servicable and not lose us any games and win us a couple of games to maybe go 9-3/10-2. also MOST people don't know what we got in this QB until after a couple SEC games against top tier talent. It's not like we got the first string QB from Florida or Clemson who has played SEC teams and done really well. He didn't have spring ball to get some of the rust off and get used to the system and practice routes etc...... SOOOOOOO time will tell thats for sure Im optimistic in he can get the job done but realistic in that if we go 8-4 or 9-3 I understand why and ive made my peace with it.

Man you should be able to tell from the profile pic and alternate title I am not a fan of Nico.

I picked the name last year because of the enunciation version of his last name looked funny for a profile on here.
Just looking at the moving Van Avatar thought that meant you loved him so much you not only took his name you're moving to a new team. A picture is worth a thousand words to quote Fredrick Barnard.

Yes; UCLA should be every Vol fan's talent bellwether. I'm concerned they didn't recruit our whole team and hire Heupel.
Sure says it all about this bunch.

Well since you brought it up, they didn't sign Nico because they think he is going to be the next Heisman quarterback. I am sure they HOPE he is but they signed him because they need the star power. UCLA has been dreadful for quite a while now and they are trying anything to resurrect a dying program. It's a gamble certainly but they are clearly a coaching staff that is grasping at straws. Nearly every running back has transferred out of the program as well, so your attempts to suggest that they have a plan is laughable. Nico wanted a big pay day and didn't get it. UT has the potential to come out of this smelling like a rose. The best UCLA can hope for is a good season from Nico and hope that it attracts more talent for 2026. That is their only play here, he isn't going to lead them on some magical undefeated season in the Big 10. They don't have the talent to compete with Ohio State, Michigan, or Penn State. Tennessee just needs a game manager that can make a few plays here and there. He is more than capable of doing that
