Joey Aguilar officially named the starter

Tennessee football has decided on who will be its starting quarterback for the 2025 season. Josh Heupel’s offense will officially be led by Joey Aguilar, the Appalachian State and UCLA transfer who joined the Vols in the spring portal window. He beat out redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre for the position on the depth chart. This was first reported by Brent Hubbs of VolQuest
Shocking.

Apparently there are folks surprised by this on my X timeline, I mean the minute Tennessee showed interest in him and he announced he was coming here he was going to be the starter. Anyone who thought different was just fooling themselves.
Crazy that anyone's surprised. (Experience + serviceable mechanics) is better than raw talent in most cases.

Literally the only reason he was recruited to come to Tennessee.

Joey’s only going to be here one year. Merk and Mac just need to keep studying and train for next year’s QB battle.
There will be no next year for Merk. The battle next spring will be between Brandon, Gmac and a portal guy. If Gmac doesn’t win the job in the spring I think he portals after spring camp.

Tell them to earn the job then
What's more concerning is maybe they aren't being developed. We're 0-2 in high school QB's and 1 was a 4* top 13 QB in the country out of high school, the other was a 5* top 3 QB in the country, so it's not like we're rolling the dice on high school QB'S.

so if GMac doesn't RS we have So, Fr and? Got to have 3
They'll pick up someone in the portal but I definitely dont see Merk staying. Unless he just wants to be a backup. From reports its plainly obvious he is not as talented as the other 2 and will never be the starter unless everyone gets hurt. I could see him starting this year if JA gets hurt or is just down right terrible but thats only because they are trying to protect Gmac this year and to give him more time. Long term though we all know Merk isn't going to see any significant time as the one running this offense.

Was hoping Merk would claim the job as validation of our recruiting and development and because of his commitment to our program as his first stop. But, he got a fair shot and got beat. So, now I am glad for the upgrade and hope Joey kills it this season.
Hard to imagine a RSFR beaten out by a SR

SR>RSFR/FR. Shouldn't try to make it more than it is
