Joe Milton discussion after game 1

That was a better BGSU team. This is NOT a good BGSU team.

This was/is also NOT a ".500 at best" roster. But CJH can't be too patient with Milton. I'm not "anti-Milton" in the least but I believe both of the other two would have hit receivers that he didn't see last night.

I dont care, bowling green is bowling green. That vols team was also better than this one in terms of overall talent. I'm not worried about it tho. I enjoyed the game last night. I wanted a more dominant performance but I can roll with that win. It was game 1 of a whole new system for these guys. You cant be any better than 1-0 after week 1.

Vegas has them at .500 but anyway.

4 wins tops yall, go ahead & screenshot this & prove me wrong by early November. I just don't see anything we did last nite to be excited about. Yah defense did ok but it was BG. Our qb play isn't going to get miraculously better & that's what it would take a miracle. I think you start each qb verse the first three games & see who is best cause apparently they all 3 stink if JM is the best we got. Michigan fans were right just like we told the WSU fans about JG. Qbs don't get drastically better. You either got it or you don't.

Did he miss some throws? Yes, they all do. Did he fail to see some open receivers? Yes, they all do (except Joe Burrow). But I think he executed the read-option really well, which showed itself in the rushing numbers. He showed the ability to extend plays. He got rid of the ball when he needed to, except for the fumble. Showed good zip on the ball and good short-to-mid range accuracy. And most importantly.... he carried himself like a leader. This is where the JG comparisions are way off base. You'll never see Milton rolling around on the ground like a soccer player when he's not really hurt. You won't see him throw up his hands when things go wrong like a 13-year-old kid. You won't see him walking up and down the sideline with his head down like he's about to cry. Milton is a warrior. You can see it in the way he carries himself, and that makes him "okay" in my book. He'll need to do better at finding open receivers and connect on more deep balls to enter the "good" category, but I'm fine with that. Believe it or not we can win 7 games with what he showed us tonight. 9 or 10 if he goes through progressions better and improves the deep ball accuracy.

He probably knows about 20% of the playbook for now and will have the chance to be more diversified as a QB. As for the long-ball, not sure if that can be re-taught this late in his college career, but if he can show some air with the same accuracy, he could be dangers. Doubt we come close to winning 9 or 10, but I'll take 7 all day long.

Didn't see him anticipate anyone and throw the ball, they were all wait till I see they are open and that's too late. Deep ball is terrible and when he runs which I was led to believe would be his strength {even though I hate that to be a QB's strength} he looked unwilling to hit the hole, almost looking for a place to fall. As far as pure passing I can't believe HB didn't get the nod. I realize I'm alone here but if the running part of the QB is more important than the throwing ACCURATELY then I will have to rethink what I thought of our new offensive staff. I realize it's one game but damn, against a team that bad that was ugly.

I don't want to bash Milton for one game, but it was like we were playing a High School team that is the problem. Milton had all day to find a receiver and still could not and looked really confused. Several times I thought the play was whistled dead, and it wasn't, Milton was just standing there, flat footed looking around. Georgia, Alabama, and every other SEC team will sack him a dozen times a game.

His fundamentals are terrible, look where he carries the ball, mid to low center, and when he decides to throw the ball it is a rocket because he is so strong and big hands, but his accuracy is way off most of the time.

Bailey is the classic Pro style passer, great ball positioning, up high, just real nice short release and the ball is gone. Bailey has been trained by some of the best QB coaches since he was a young kid, training camps galore and he is accurate.

Milton is just a raw talent that has so many fundamental issues, it will be very difficult if not impossible for him to become a great passer.

Judging from last nights performance and his career at Michigan -don't think Milton's got "it". In college decent to good quarterbacks A) have good touch and B) Good QB's can anticipate the break and put the ball where it needs to be -leading the receiver or throwing the receiver open. Saw none of that last night, a good D would have had at least one pick last night. College QB just cannot throw the ball on a rope every time, makes it hard to go over the top- I THINK BAILEY would THRIVE in this Offense- What say you?
PS Hope I'm wrong about Milton, would gladly eat crow- Anybody watch any of that Heuple's old team UCF last night ?-

Last thing I saw from "Vegas" was 6.5 wins.

hopefully Milton will grow from this and improve, I noticed he had a challenge with accuracy on the long balls

He wont see that kind of pocket time in the conference. Big trouble.
thought the same thing, I hope to see improvement in the coming weeks - but I was thinking about the SEC pass rushers and pressure-
I'm sure Milton will be ready

I think Hooker would be much better than Bailey. He looked good in relief until the fumble which he appeared to be trying to pull. He throws it well and gives you a better run option than Milton.

I just hope that there's low tolerance for what we saw last night regardless of who gets the next shot. Heupel was pretty openly critical of Milton's performance in a honest but positive way. He didn't cover for him.

It’s only one game in, brand new system, brand new coach, brand new oline, brand new receivers, brand new playing environment, basically brand new everything for him. But if there’s no progress between now and UF then it may be time to look at HB or HH.

I don’t want to hate on Milton too much but it is kind of hard not to point out the obvious. His accuracy leaves A LOT to be desired. If he plays like this moving forward it is going to extremely tough to win games. His accuracy and decision making must improve dramatically. The receivers were open all night but he couldn’t get them the ball or was too indecisive clutching that rock like his favorite pillow. He is not a Dobbs type of runner but he does have the ability to make plays with his legs. I believe Heupel made him the starter because of his upside and potential to be good. I did not see that from his as passer unfortunately. Bailey or Hooker will probably be inserted into the PITT game If JM plays like this for the first few series. Is he JG level? God I hope not.

BG dropped eight. They played the LBs in the short zone and safeties held two middle thirds. Not discounting Milton’s lack of touch, but we will never see that again. BG pulled the equivalent of year one Kiffin vs Alabama. When you play a team that can beat you by 35, run the clock on O, and take away one full facet on D. It was pretty smart for appearances sake. They committed to losing to avoid a blowout. Heupel has designed an offense that is based on a three option check down over 1.5 seconds. Milton was still shopping at five seconds. His passing stats are a useless data point.

Seriously are our WR's that bad? Is Joe incapable of finding an open man or can we not get open?

Also I see we still can't stop the slant.
I think our WR's are a lot better than they showed last night. Hard to catch a fastball on short passes. Milton needs a little more touch on his passes. Throwing fastballs every time isn't going to cut it. I think if Bailey was the one making the same throws our WR's look like all stars.

Agree. If we come out next week and sputter in the first half at offense, I’ll be disappointed if the next man doesn’t get a shot.

I am unsure how you take that game and label him anything like JG. JG never could read a defense and set his OL up. Outside of the fumble play I feel like Milton set the OL up great. His 7-8 seconds each play showed that to be the case. Now onto his pocket presence and being indecisive. That to me was his weak point last night. He is going to have to pull the trigger sooner. He has to be more confident in his read and go with it. He was not confident in the read and then held the ball hoping something would open up that was better. The pre snap game to me was 100% better than anything we have seen in the past 4 years. Previously even against bad and overmatched teams they were pressuring the QB almost immediately. That didn't happen last night. So was it a good performance from Milton? Although it was far from a terrible performance. There was definitely good takeaways from the performance.

You can't couch "touch". And Big Joe has no touch at all.

Yeah, that's my only concern with him. Maybe it was just first game jitters, but I'm beginning to wonder if he is our best option if he can't aim better what he showed last night.

If I were the head coach, I think I would give him another shot, but be ready to pull him early in the second quarter, if he doesn't show improvement. There's a lot to like about him, but his aim has got to be better than what we saw last night.
