Joe Milton discussion after game 1

Sooo many armchair QBs in the forum. It’s too bad none of you guys went to the walk-on tryouts…
it was vanilla for a reason. I really believe we will here a different tune next week after Pitt.

I hope you're right. I really want Milton to be the guy. He's got so much potential.

I'm just frustrated with what I watched last night after seeing JG for years.

Did he miss some throws? Yes, they all do. Did he fail to see some open receivers? Yes, they all do (except Joe Burrow). But I think he executed the read-option really well, which showed itself in the rushing numbers. He showed the ability to extend plays. He got rid of the ball when he needed to, except for the fumble. Showed good zip on the ball and good short-to-mid range accuracy. And most importantly.... he carried himself like a leader. This is where the JG comparisions are way off base. You'll never see Milton rolling around on the ground like a soccer player when he's not really hurt. You won't see him throw up his hands when things go wrong like a 13-year-old kid. You won't see him walking up and down the sideline with his head down like he's about to cry. Milton is a warrior. You can see it in the way he carries himself, and that makes him "okay" in my book. He'll need to do better at finding open receivers and connect on more deep balls to enter the "good" category, but I'm fine with that. Believe it or not we can win 7 games with what he showed us tonight. 9 or 10 if he goes through progressions better and improves the deep ball accuracy.
He's got the quickest release we've seen since Tyler Bray which should make him hard to sack.

Compare his 1st quarter passing stats to the rest of the game…I believe he was 8-10 for 95 yards in the 1st quarter. That would make him 4-14 for 45 yards in the other 3 quarters.

but he holds the ball way to long - got sacked three times last night. Play like that against Georgia and they will get a dozen sacks.

2017
Vs Southern Miss 9-13 102 yards 0 TD/0 INT

2018
Vs UTEP 12-16 168 yards 1 TD/0 INT
Vs Charlotte 16-21 172 yards 1 TD/0 INT

2019
Vs GA State 26-40 311 yards 1 TD/0 INT
VS UAB 13-21 147 yards 1 TD/1 INT

I know all the cool kids want to act like JG is the worst QB that’s ever been on God’s green earth, but he never played that poorly against such an inferior opponent like Milton did tonight when it came to throwing the ball.
Go look up what happened every time JG played Vandy.

140 yards against bowling green.
140 yards
Those are JG numbers if I ever saw them.
145 on 24 attempts vs 64 rushing plays. We ran a lot of screens and RAN A LOT. 326 yards worth.
you can’t just pick one Stat to make point. He had 145 passing, 44 rushing and 3 TDs.
look at the drives coming out of the gate and after the half. This is the offense we will see moving forward.

The problem is simple. He can’t read the game fast enough. He had open guys all over the field. He also threw the ball late on several passes.

My season prediction ( Milton scrambles and gets dinged up. Bailey comes in and balls out).

On another note: I liked our guards tonight. Tackles were lacking.

And unfortunately we’ve seen this before. Pretty much everything the Michigan fans said (minus the interceptions) was validated last night.

We ran a lot because that's what was working. I'll bet our game plan going in wasn't to run 64 running plays. The passing game just wasn't there and it was a combination of both QB and WR play.

A wins is a win, but to take pride in a win like this is sad...

UT should have scored at least 50 on this team.
They scored 59 on them last time in 2015...... and gave up 30. And that 2015 team was supposed to be gooooood. Dobbs, Kamara, Jennings. Back to reality man, take the win, enjoy it. Sure is a lot of whining on this board. It's like suddenly a team that was .500 at best was expected to look like Alabama on week 1, year 1 of a whole new coaching staff and system.

HB would have picked that secondary apart with that much time. 60 points easily while we saw the same struggling QB style of JG, not able to read the defense or find open receivers, always late on the throw. These big arm guys just seem to work out very well, they just don't have much touch.

The same problems that caused him to lose his job at Michigan are still a problem at Tennessee.
Eventually, HB will become the starting QB as he has the mental ability and touch to make a much higher % of passes. Manning didn't have a cannon arm either, but he was exceptional at reading defenses and finding open receiver that he could hit on the money.

Do you even remember JG? The guy who was better at throwing to opposing players than his own?

Milton made one dangerous pass in this game to the flat. The other bad throws were uncatchable by anyone. He threw the ball away once where JG would toss it to the sideline at the first hint of pressure or get sacked.

Oh, and you left out 3 TDs. Quite convenient.
Dude... Just no. Milton threw 3 balls last night that are going the other way in the SEC. The flat, the TD at the end, the other endzone pass to Hyatt that was severly under thrown. Plus the fumble. That's very JG no matter how you wanna sugar coat. Y'all said Bailey held the ball too long lol. This dudes feet are in buckets of concrete in the pocket. Yes he has some escapability but he isn't fast enough to beat the UF's UGA's to the edge. He can sling it a mile though. Likely strongest arm in college ball but 11-23 or 24 for 140 blows. Vandy could have beaten this team we played last night

Yeah, he did not play to my expectations. Needs a lot of improvement. Concerned about him and that Oline. SEC defenses will destroy the offense I saw against BG.

8-4 is looking more like 6-6.

JG was a 4 year starter who couldn't anticipate throws or find open receivers. I think we should give Milton a little more rope than this.... However this is NOT the improvement in QB play we need. I don't know if the receivers were struggling to get off coverage that much but I do know he missed some open guys. He went in streaks which is a large part of why he didn't keep the job at Michigan.

Didn't do well when pressured, stood flat footed, held the ball too long, also wasn't accurate on the long ball. His wr's did drop a couple of passes that would of had the score in the 50 range. He'll have to improve a lot and move around more or he won't last the season.

That was a better BGSU team. This is NOT a good BGSU team.

This was/is also NOT a ".500 at best" roster. But CJH can't be too patient with Milton. I'm not "anti-Milton" in the least but I believe both of the other two would have hit receivers that he didn't see last night.

"I thought Milton looked okay" - Stevie Wonder

If that was just an average SEC D tonight, we likely score one or two TD's. Milton was terrible.
I agree. 11 completions against one of the worst teams in the country. Yikes. People can say "oh its just 1 game" blah blah. It wasn't good, no matter how you spin it. If we play like that against Pitt were going to lose by 2 or 3 TDs minimum and the VN meltdown will be epic.

Three and outs kills this offense. Chill guys. We barely had the ball the second quarter. Quicker reads will help and can’t drop passes. Second half will be better.

This aged well

Edit: I meant this sincerely. I did not expect to still see people griping this morning but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

I saw him throw a ball down field... not check down JG...
I’d rather him find his check down and pick up some yardage than stand in the pocket too long, scramble, and then either get sacked, throw an incompletion, or run out of bounds.
