JJ returning punts

I say we give G. Jones a shot again. He muffed one in the opener because the sun was directly in his eyes and hasn't seen action as a returner since.

there are about twenty guys we should be using over our best defensive player, period. add to the fact he almost gave up a TD earlier in the game on a fumble, got -12 yds on 3 attempts...where is the coaching here? Same thing happened with Gordon earlier in the season. Do players have to cough up the ball or get injured before Dooley realizes there's a better option?

I said last week how I'd hate to see JJ get hurt returning punts & someone replied that LSU does it with Peterson. So what. We dont have enough depth in the secondary right now to lose someone to injury returning punts. Especially JJ!!! Put someone back there that 1)can catch the ball & 2)will not hurt us as bad IF they are injured. I vote for DaRick.

I think that is contradicting. Losing Da'Rick would hurt us, IMO. He definitely needs the game experience and reps right now. We will need him(and this experience) bad next August. We are losing Denarius and G Jones. Are they not allowed to use the tinted/mirrored visors for punt returns? Sun in the eyes has caused several fumbles on punt returns this year alone. If it's gonna be this big of a problem, just put your very best hands out there and call a fair catch every time. In the alternative, I'm with the above poster who said "go for the block every time."

Exactly. We need JJ on D. Dooley, just put someone back there that can catch and FC everything. We haven't gotten a punt return yet---have we? I remember a decent KR, but they had to reverse to get that. Maybe we don't have a ST coach.

I think Oku is the best bet. I don't recall him actually muffing a kick, which at this point, is all I think people are really looking for.

When it comes to returning punts we just need to get through this year and into next when Young can do it.

Zach Rogers?

I was just about to say that. Can't we also stick Neal back there? I know he does kick offs but he seems to have a quick first step. We'll have a few new options next year with some speedy freshman recruits.

I agree it would hurt us losing DaRick. All im trying to say is it would'nt hurt us as bad as losing JJ. Also, JJ did call for a fair catch on one that he muffed. If he can't see the ball then get the heck out of the way. Just sayin

At this point in the year, I say put whoever has the surest hands and make him fair catch it. Go for a punt block everytime. A turnover deep in your territory is much more devastating than a punt return is positive. Percentage wise, a long return is not likely. Work in the off season on getting 2 guys who can get results for next year.

I just want someone who knows what the fair catch rule is, realizes that they don't have to take one to the house every return, and can catch the *^@# ball. We got extremely lucky that Ole Miss was too inept to recover the first one JJ muffed.
