Jimmy Hyams voice of reason?

Another thing to consider is we, as rabid fans of the Vols, are the ones who are concerned the most. Outside of our fan base, and a few of our rivals, nobody cares. To us, it's terrible. We had some press and made the espn ticker for a few days. The plaintiffs shot their wad with dud bullets. When espn realized they should have vetted their sources more thoroughly, the ticker went silent. Sure, the plaintiffs will try to pull some more crap, but they will not get the reaction they want.

Very good post! We, as fans, see UT's name scroll across the bottom on ESPN and panic. But can anyone tell us anything else that scrolled across it? Doubtful.

While I'm not disagreeing with your sentiment, are you ready for at least two more years of this? For what I've heard a trial wouldn't take place for two to three years. And even if UT wins the image has been tarnished. It's just a tough situation.

right...why would we want the truth to be revealed? just pay em off and UT gets to keep that image....this sounds like Washington DC rhetoric IMHO :shades:

Most people are looking for the quickest most painless way of ending this. And the attorneys for the plaintiffs know this.

You seem worried that Tennessee's image has been tarnished even if they win. It is more tarnished if they settle. It is trashed if they lose. When your choices are what they are here, and only one is acceptable, you take it.

200 years ago, this kind of junk was settled in a different, more honorable way. It isn't allowed anymore, so what the heck, fight it. It has gone beyond a settlement.

UT has already been drug through the mud and the damage is done so why not fight these allegations? UT is going to have to get some strong leadership, they are teetering with becoming the new Colorado.

Nobody says it in person, but I read it online a lot particularly from UK and Vandy fans. They also like to call us the Vawls and Voles etc, as though it's demeaning even though we own them.

And yes, that is what I meant when I said institute.

Edit: Oh yes, don't forget the Vandy favorite, the Viles.

WEAK...that 3rd grade name calling goes on no matter what.

Fight it.......Just look at this thread when nobody was asked about FSU or FSU was not even mentioned. BUT a lot of the replies still brought up FSU as an example of their name will keep coming up for years when talking about alleged sexual assault. Settle and it will be FSU and UT Vols bunched together as a reply. It will pop in peoples mind that know little about cases so settle and you are guilty infinitely.

I still don't know what they could do other than suspend or kick a player off the team? Shouldn't the lawsuit be against the state of tn for not imprisoning the accused "guilty" assailents?

By the way it is tiresome to see some our more weak kneed VN fans on their knees begging to settle because of reputation being smeared. Dudes and like minded dudettes, they've already smeared us, that is not going away. You can't unring a bell, you only get one bite at the apple going public with "rape culture," how many times can they kill you? Once is the answer for those of you from Copper Basin. They've done it already. Now do you slink in a hole and let it stand or do you come back for boomerang revenge and clear our name? Friends, Vols, country folk lend me your ears! Fight this smear of our institution, vanquish the accusers and make them rue the day they attacked us!! Make them pay to the %$#@ing grave and beyond!

It doesn't matter now if it takes 2 or 3 years IMO because the people that bought in to all the negatives will always believe their opinion was right if UT settles. I just think that from here on out, unless a major development arises that is unforeseen, old news is just that old news and who cares. Their best shot has been fired at the Volunteer Nation.... Time to fight back, Remember the Alamo... Just saying

At this point it may be better if it takes two years. That much more time for names to leak and for the public to get tired of it. In two years the criminal trials may all be finished. In two years the plaintiffs may settle for a fraction of what they want now and be willing to seal this. I just see time on our side now.

The Title IX lawsuit carries much less weight when each of the cases involved are examined individually rather than in totality and done so without a sensational headline such as, "Butch Jones called player a 'traitor' for assisting a rape victim, per sworn affidavit".

The Tennessean won't do this however. Their approach to reporting on sexual assault claims is not from a neutral point of view. It is in fact, to enhance the claims. Hyams deserve credit for at least bringing a neutral stance to a report without sensationalism.

I still think a good first step would be to absolutely humiliate Vandy in November. Never let up, run up the score. Let the Tennessean watch it's pet team be subjected to viscous blows while it remains unable to respond. Maybe those 60 minutes will seem like a couple of years to them. Without doubt as "intellectual prodigies" Anita and her merry band probably see sports and football in particular as beneath them, and would miss the insult.

What kind of Title IX reform?

For one, the part of Title IX that allows suits like this, and several others, to exist.

My primary issue with Title IX is that it is ripe for abuse by people accusing schools of not protecting 'victims', many of whom are filing suits that would be totally laughed at if Title IX didn't give them some grounds. Title IX requires schools to handle sexual assault cases with special tribunals to keep federal funding leaving schools wide open to all kinds of BS.

The women in this case are saying Tennessee failed to keep them safe by following due process, for instance. Criminal cases belong in the courts, not in administrative chambers where biased folks (on both sides) can ruin a kid's life.

The most ridiculous aspect to this suit against Tennessee, from what I can tell, is the inclusion of Alexis Johnson's accuser as a plaintiff. As Jimmy Hyams pointed out, she is not even a UT student and UT was never given a chance to implement their investigative protocol before she was added to the suit. Nor was Alexis Johnson on campus long enough to have been influenced by any existing culture. He was, however, immediately suspended from the team following the allegation. What was Tennessee (Butch Jones or any member of the administration) supposed to do for her? This is crazy.

I think people are missing the point. It's trial by innuendo - by character assassination. She doesn't need to be a student to prove their point - only the fact that he is portrayed as a predator and is a student and on campus and, therefore, a "threat" to other women who are students and also on campus. That's why all the other things are thrown in; it's not about specific incidences and the outcome; it's an attempt to make it about a lot of incidences so it looks like a pervasive or "cultural" problem. They are trying to make UT look like a wild animal habitat while calling itself a Title IX compliant petting zoo. If they accomplish that with volume on "incidents", then they can work on payment for individual "victims". If you create enough smoke to get everyone to agree that there must be a fire, then you can claim burn victims - without actual proof of a fire - just innuendo.

It's all sad no matter what. The old-boy network has run over way too many lives along the way and karma does have a nasty bite. Cheek and Hart must go. One is clueless and underhanded, the other nothing but a poor man's used car salesman. If you contribute to UTK as I have for decades, refuse to give another dime until these two poor representations of Tennessee are gone. $$ and only $$ talks!

Definitely fight back. Good write up. We kid about Jimmy not reporting things until he has confirmed rekiable sources instead of reporting first rumor he hears. That being said his reporting is spot on.

Agreed. Personally, I've never really understood all the Jimmy bashing that goes on. I've come to appreciate his reporting even more now that we're on the receiving end of so-called reporters randomly slinging $hit against the wall to see if anything sticks. From what I've seen, he may report some thing later than others but he's very accurate.
