Jimmie Kimmel Show gone !

I remember when the narrative was "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me."
I remember when it was "sticks and stones my break my bones, so don't throw no sticks or stones"

They coerced Twitter and Facebook into censoring millions of Americans. Or does that not count?
What does that allegation have to do with the firing of Carano?

Facebook and Twitter are private platforms, there was nothing stopping them from telling anyone to go pound sand.

That's fair to point out, but it ignores the one thing that has complicated matters here : The public threat made against ABC by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr prior to the show's cancellation.
I think it'd be fair to atleast entertain the notion that if Roseanne and Gina were not immediately fired, there may have been public threat to those outlets. Maybe not FCC to outlet, but from the public. Not same, same. But related.

Well enough has come out know they were told to censor and tell people to go pound sand.

Is restricting the speech of millions better or worse than restricting the speech of one?

The post I responded to was trying to equate Carano's firing with Kimmel's, but now you want to change the subject to Facebook and Twitter blocking covid misinformation at the the request of the feds?

Requests that they were under no legal obligation to honor, but chose to do so.

Accurate and true, but perceived, or implied, retribution can be a powerful influence.

What perceived retribution? Did Biden come out two weeks early and make some statement that facebook and twitter should be shutdown if they didn't start censoring covid disinformation?

You’re not connecting the dots properly. First of all, Trump didn’t even know about this by the time ABC made the decision. He was overseas in another time zone. This was driven by affiliates in MAGA parts of the country and they did not want to run a show led by a guy who is telling them that their people (a MAGA guy) killed CK. As for ABC Kimmel’s ratings weren’t justifying his show’s price tag so they’re more than willing to use this off ramp

Your theory would be more plausible in a vacuum but it doesn’t hold up based upon the timing and Kimmel’s comments

You are overlooking a significant matter .... Yes, the affiliates played a huge role here, but not for the reason you would like to believe.

Nexstar currently owns 33 ABC affiliates, but they are seeking expansion. Nexstar needs massive de-regulation from the FCC in order to complete a merger that will expand their accessibility to 80% of American households. Therefore, the threats made by Brendan Carr carried enormous weight for everyone involved. Not just Disney/ABC, but Nexstar and their massive expansion of ABC affiliates.

I'm sorry, but you can't deny the role that Carr's threat has played in this controversy.

As a theory, fine.

As a statement of fact, not so fast my friend.

Because the market was going to take care of all of this organically. If Kimmel’s show was a profit center, I’m not sure Disney would have flinched.

I think you're missing the point. This isn't about what Kimmel said, or what Disney would have done or wouldn't have done.

Problem is that the FCC guy made his threat and Kimmel was soon pulled. Its a lay up for any decent civil rights lawyer to win a claim for a First Amendment violation.

What's more alarming is Trump's comments about broad review of licenses of any network that airs commentary critical of him. Thats just blatantly unconstitutional.

Carr’s comments would not have meant a thing unless Kimmel stepped in it…which he did

You don’t have a case unless ABC files it. I don’t think they will as I think they’re glad to be rid of Kimmel. Do you think ABC will file such a layup suit? I do not

And if no lawyer signs up for the lay up? Does it mean it isn't a 1st amendment violation?

Circumstantial evidence is still evidence. Here are facts we know:

1.) Kimmel made his comments on Monday
2.) Tuesday his show went on no problem
3.) Wednesday late afternoon head of FCC makes threats
4.) The single largest owner of local television stations, Nextstar, is awaiting a several billion dollar approval on a merger that would require not just FCC approval but a major change in FCC policy. They inform ABC they are pulling the show.

It doesn't take much to have a pretty good guess as to what is going on here

Carr's comments represent government overreach. What Kimmel said was wrong, but that doesn't excuse Carr's authoritarian threats. The government should have stayed out of this .... but they didn't.
