I may be wrong about this, but my gut says that quote is coming from his compromise with Democrats who controlled congress on immigration reform. They were supposed to grant amnesty and then get tighter on immigration processes. Politically, he had to sell it to America. Of course, after amnesty was granted nothing changed.

I’m sure it was… Imagine, working together to pass legislation after compromise. Though, if you think that’s Reagan’s only pro-immigration quote, you’d be wrong.

I wouldn't think that at all. That issue and the compromise with the democrats was in the news for a long time.

I think you may have missed something though, the compromise was agreed upon and Reagan fulfilled his end. The Democrats didn't. And the can got kicked down the road, again.

I am not an expert on his presidency or immigration during his terms. Maybe someone else can provide insight especially if my wires are crossed.

The ice raids and sending in national guard to assist with crime are considered the centerpiece examples of Trump's Authoritarian rule.

Open Borders and lax on crime policies post BLM protests and riots are certainly germane to the Biden presidency. Certainly he has even a small portion of responsibility considering America disagreed with it to the extent they would elect an authoritarian president.

I’m not an expert on it either, but I’m not pointing to specific policy, I’m pointing to his overarching sentiment, and the way he talked about immigration. He didn’t scapegoat immigrants. He embraced them personally and politically. A stark contrast to the current administration, no?

That was because we had effective leadership in three levels of government. We've not had that since, I give Clinton credit but much of that goes to others like Gengrich as well.

The climate was completely different though. There was not irresponsible policy toward immigration prior, there were jobs available, housing.

The climate which led to Reagan’s election was very downtrodden, oil crisis, hyperinflation, crack epidemic, terrible violence in cities, etc. Circumstances should not be an excuse for moral ambiguity.

Less free than when people were barred from using public parks, beaches, boat ramps and cops raiding churches that were holding services? When businesses were forced to close and employees were threatened with termination if they didn't take a vaccine?
