Probabaly so he can have his own limelight moment...

In all honesty he is a great coach. But he would have been overshadowed today though.

I was thinking about this and only thing I could think of is maybe they are trying to get more of the offensive staff in place before having a press conference. Could they possibly land Gonzalez and want him to be introduced at the same time as Chaney to make more of a splash in the media.

i'm a little confused on what an OC will do when, if i understand it right, CLK will be doing the play calling and such...?

He will be coaching the OL....

And he will be teaching CLK's philosophy to the players. Highly doubt he will be calling plays.

CLK did leave the possibility open for his OC to call plays though, if "he trusted them."

I think trusted him = learn under him for a couple years.

He did do a great job with Kyle Orton (regardless of how good or bad you think Orton is in the NFL)

I think a lot of it will be how well they gel up through spring practice.

It may be one of those deals where Chaney makes a call and CLK either okays or vetoes.

But I would bet that it'd be more likely CLK calls plays.

Maybe since Mike Shanahan's firing, Lane wanted to talk to Jeremy Bates before officially hiring Chaney.

Bates will remain in the NFL. He is very highly respected.

And Chaney has already been hired. The formal announcement will be later.

I am from Purdue Country, and a life long fan. Not only did Cheney coach Ortin, but he also Coached Dru Breeze. This is an offense that puts up staggering numbers, and this was with less than stellar receivers (Breese had Stratton TE and Standaford WR, Orton had only one WR can't remember his name at the moment). 500 yards a game was almost the average, with a low scoring game being about 20. I'm not sure how the more purist type fan base of Tennessee will handle the "basketball on grass," but I for one am excited to see what this offense can do with more NFL caliber players than just in the QB position and a running back. Look for many drives that can run the length of the field in less than a minute. I'm really pumped about this choice.

Does Cheney use a run and shoot type offense? Hopefully not---UT needs a big time running game. The only problem is drayton, the RB coach, who can't coach worth a lick.

I know a few here on the board questioned Chaney's hiring due to his recent stint with the Rams but that's like questioning Lane based on his stint with the Raiders. Like OrangeYankee mentioned it's his college background that's impressive and it fits nicely with CLK vision.

Ya, last time I ever post anything before I get my coffee after a two week hiatus from getting up early, sorry my bad. And to the run and shoot question, when Chaney was at Purdue it was almost all pass (mainly because we had no running back worth a crap), and if I had to guess, it would be pass first run second at UT with a better talent pool at that position. This is definitely not a football purists' offense by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a ton of fun to watch and will be highly successful with the talent UT can pull in. However, this is all moot if CLK calls the plays.

To add to that, this is the guy who was down TWICE against Saban's Michigan State by two touchdowns with less than a minute to go, and we walked out of both of those with a W. I understand the importance of a run game, but in today's era, I completely am of the belief that you need to be able to drive the field and score in a hurry on a consistent basis. Running the ball just can not accomplish that.
