3rd behind Burrow and Tua. I remember a thread like this last year causing all sorts if controversy lol. He couldn't seem to throw a quick short pass for anything tonight but he did a good job otherwise. He's a leader and I want to see this guy come back next year, beat the competition, and prove all the haters wrong in a big way with a solid season. He's all Vol and took a lot of undeserved **** this year. Same for the coaching staff. Chaney is in a good place making plenty of money and his wife loves Knoxville.

Kinda easy to have a great quarterback rating when all you do is throw the check down every play.

There are very, very few "haters" and he took some very WELL deserved criticism this year. He played like crap early on. He's played better since getting benched and finally getting his head right.

If he'll keep playing like this then I think all UT fans want him back. But don't pretend he wasn't pretty bad for about 2 years.

PS- he still hasn't led the Vols to more than 30 points vs an FBS defense.

Always like Chaney. Never closed the door on Pruitt or the rest.

You're wrong. There's a LOT of JG haters and Pruitt ones too. Watch over the next several days comments in here and all over the forum.

I never claimed he was the second coming of Manning or didn't deserve some criticism. All I said was the people pissing on him and hoping he transfers that I hope he makes them eat crow. He's not a quitter and I doubt he is thin skinned enough to listen to that BS. He said in an interview the only people that matter in football are his teammates and coaches. But surely the negativity has been eating at him. It would be great to see him turn that into a positive. And to watch him battle it out with Bailey next season who some have already proclaimed the starter.. haha!! Guess we'll see about that...

His completion % for the Mizzou game was terrible so all other stats, including the W, mean nothing.

Based on advanced stats I've created, I thought JG was the 4th or 5th best QB in the SEC heading into the season (behind Tua, Fromm, Burrow, and maybe Bryant). He certainly didn't look it back in September, but now I think you can make a legit case that he's back in that territory; except the debate would be between Kellen Mond, Kyle Trask, and JG at this point.

The people saying Maurer or Shrout should have been the starters all year long from the get go were wrong. We still lose both GA St and BYU probably even worse if they had started.
Not disagreeing with that. It took half the season and losing the starting job for JG to become decent and even then he wasn't playing full games until now. His performance tonight was exceptional, but we saw one or two of those last year as well. Lest see how he does the next two games. Maybe he can finally lead the team to more than 30 points against a D1 team next week.

BYU is the one game I think we might've won with Maurer or Shrout. That was one of JG's worst games IMO. JG didn't play spectacular against Ga State, but our defense was by far the bigger issue.

But I also think we probably lose the Kentucky and Mizzou games with Maurer or Shrout. JG played pretty well in both of those games and is much less mistake prone than both of them. JG looked worlds-ahead of Maurer in that Kentucky game in particular.

I do think both Maurer and Shrout have higher upside, but they both have a way to go in getting mistakes under control. Both try to force the issue way too often.

It won't mean anything if he does. We're talking about Vandy here. I just want to win. I said it after the Kentucky win that I want to beat Mizzou and Vandy and whoever comes next in whatever bowl game. Let's build a winning culture again. Next year is a clean slate. Maybe JG can truly redeem himself then? A handful of games in this season ain't redemption but the guy doesn't deserve to be dogged like he has been either. There's plenty of blame and excuses to go around.

He was benched in favor of a wild child, true freshman less than halfway through the season, but he took too much undeserved criticism?

Who doesn’t love revisionist history?

No one can argue JG played poorly early this year. He made bad reads and threw late....all the time. Regardless of that he never deserved the hate he received; terrible.

Since USCjr he’s been on the rise. Not perfect but played better and better. Tonight he was fantastic. If we don’t fumble late (again) we likely pull away in a comfortable win. Anyone still questioning this kids heart and commitment to Tennessee needs to get a psych eval.

Pretty sure everyone is happy JG is making a turnaround this season. No one is hating on him, he wasn’t playing well early on. Could be because he was still learning chaneys offense, but who knows.

Dude I've been here forever. I know what's been said and to a degree by who. There are A LOT of people who were critical of JG's play from 2017 until right around the USCe game this year. Why? Because he played hesitant and made bad decisions. I wrote him off. I didn't think it would ever click. It was never personal. I'm very happy that it finally came together for him.

But since you made the claim... name the JG "haters". I saw a lot of the fire Pruitt stuff. You can look back and see that I said we should wait to see what he did with the time he had left. Lots of people are now on the bandwagon... I need to see more before becoming "pro" Pruitt... and I actually like his personality as a coach and that he's a really good coach of the game.

I never claimed he was the second coming of Manning or didn't deserve some criticism. All I said was the people pissing on him and hoping he transfers that I hope he makes them eat crow.
I said I hoped he transferred for the teams' sake AND HIS. Very seldom does someone sink to the depths JG was at then recover without a change of scenery. High praise to him for doing just that.

He's not a quitter and I doubt he is thin skinned enough to listen to that BS.
He's never been a quitter. I suspect much of his problem was listening to too many voices including the negative ones and then getting down on himself.

He said in an interview the only people that matter in football are his teammates and coaches. But surely the negativity has been eating at him.
Yes. Which is why A his play needed to improve or B he needed to get a fresh start somewhere else.

It would be great to see him turn that into a positive. And to watch him battle it out with Bailey next season who some have already proclaimed the starter.. haha!! Guess we'll see about that...
Right now there are at least two guys ahead of Bailey. I hope he's great. But I need to see it before declaring it. Things that give me pause is that he's a great HS QB but that doesn't always translate into college. Also he's surrounded by an incredibly talented team. What kind of rating might Maurer have had if he hadn't been surrounded by a really, really bad team?

It is fine to be excited about a recruit but lots of people hype them up then call them "busts" when they don't become dominant as underclassmen. That's unfair... and stupid.

He deserved criticism in the media and forums like this. needed to be benched for sure. But anyone that sent him hate messages, death threats, or harassed his sister needs to be slapped.
I'm not a violent guy... but I would LOVE to meet those idiots. And his sisters? Really? They need to be tied to a tree somewhere in Newfound Gap and left.
