Hopefully, the pounds are muscle and not fat.

Yeah good luck with that. There is not going to be 300lb dudes that are all muscle that just isn't reality. Arnold was 6'2 and averaged around 235lbs. Even if he was a couple inches taller there is no way he would have ever been close to 300lbs. The closest lineman that I have heard of that is built similar to a body builder is Tyron Smith with the Cowgirls and he's a freak of nature. Lineman can be "in shape" and athletic and still have some fat on them.

Pro bowl OT Joe Thomas when he played football on the left and Joe Thomas when he retired on the right. I would have liked to see him play in the NFL with all of that "muscle" on the right.

The main thing is that these guys are not the kind of projects that some of our prior recruits were. Most just need to build strength and lose some fat.

Having said that . . .

Huge kudos have to go to those undersized guys like Marcus Tatum who Butch recruited to play OL in the SEC who fought through the injuries and sub-par trainers to get where they are now.

2016 Marcus Tatum:

Marcus Tatum - Football Recruiting - Player Profiles - ESPN

6-6, 252

2019 Marcus Tatum:

Marcus Tatum - Football - University of Tennessee Athletics

6-6, 316

Really impressed with Marcus. You can't coach that kind of heart,

While Marcus has indeed gained weight (finally) commensurate with being an OL with his height, Doug Mathews mentioned him last week on his show as being a kid with good athleticism but still not enough strength to be the player they need at this point. He mentioned Marcus as he discussed each OLineman expected to contribute this year.....sure sounded like he had an inside source close to the situation as he discussed each player. We’ll see.....he’s certainly been wrong about things before.

That said, not sure how a kid gaining 50 pounds in 3 years proves that he has “heart that you can’t coach”. Now, if he wins a starting job and plays at a much higher level than any of us would expect, plays with a lot of tenacity and grit, maybe even makes a postseason 2nd or 3rd all-SEC team....then I can agree with you.

Mathews normally gets something wrong during his show on Sunday.

The kid got thrown to the dogs too early by Butch's lack of planning, so he was undeveloped and injured through no fault of his own.

Has has kept fighting, was very solid last year, and will be a huge part of this offense this year.

He has tons of heart and character from what I can see, and I don't think he has anything to prove on that front.
