Jermod McCoy - Rehab update?

Don't see any NFL team using a 1st round pick to take a guy who hasn't played a down in 18 months due to a knee injury. Some guys never get back to 100%. Could be wrong.
Especially since it was an off the field injury. If he can get to 90% he'll be better than his backup and get on the field.

I haven't seen or heard anything, but my wildly speculative guess is JM is out for the season.

That's based solely on the principle of planning for the worst and hoping for the best.
I will base it on medicine and outcomes. His ACL should be fine by late October at the latest, but his conditioning, etc. may take a month or two. However, he could heal up within the 6 month timeframe and be ready to go around the beginning of the season.

All that said, the OP asked if anyone has heard anything. I have not, and only learned of his injury yesterday from the Sports Animal podcast on Spotify.

Tennessee Volunteers cornerback Jermod McCoy suffered a torn ACL during training in January 2025 and underwent surgery. While he's expected to return near the start of the 2025 season, he will miss spring practice as he recovers, according to WATE 6 On Your Side. The injury is a setback for the Vols, as McCoy was a key player and a top performer in their defense during the 2024 season.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Injury: McCoy tore his ACL during a training session at his home in Texas.

  • Surgery: He has already had surgery to repair the torn ACL.

  • Recovery: The typical recovery time for an ACL tear is 6-9 months, according to Rocky Top Insider.

  • Return Timeline: The hope is for him to return near the start of the 2025 season, according to Saturday Down South.

  • Impact: McCoy's injury is a significant blow to the Tennessee defense, as he was a key player and a top performer in 2024.

  • 2024 Season: McCoy had a strong sophomore season, earning second-team All-SEC honors and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, according to WATE 6 On Your Side. He had 4 interceptions and 13 passes defended.

  • Potential Replacements: Tennessee will likely need to find a contingency plan for McCoy, potentially looking at players like Jalen McMurray or exploring the transfer portal, according to Rocky Top Talk

I heard the injury was worse than expected. I’m really hoping he got surgery away from the university. Would be best case senario for him IMO

The FB athletes dont get worked on by random azz doctors and surgeons. They have a staff that are some of the best in their fields. An All-Star team of sorts. There are millions of dollars and titles on the line. You dont just let whomever happens to be on call at UT perform these surgeries. Stupid post is stupid. Also...how bout not crapping on UT medical centers doctors? Bet they're better than what's down there in broke azz Mississippi...poorest state in the South.

I tore my ACL on 3/17. I still walk with a limp 2.5 months after reconstruction. I’m a little older, but I wish I had the money and time to recover like athletes do in 2025. We need to hope it’s not rushed. I’m not going back to full sport until some time after I’m cleared.
Thanks for the update

Per Austin Price, he’s recovering ahead of schedule and is running but still working on turning out of his breaks. Seemed optimistic when he talked with the 1045 guys.. would be great to have him for the UGA game, I don’t think we’ll need him in the first two
Any word on Kitselmans recovery?

Acl surgeries have changed. One big change is “all inside” approach with no long incisions and full opening which helps speed recovery. PT is also sooner and more aggressive after surgery than years ago. Various tissues used as scaffolds/protection help with recovery as well.
Atrophy happens fast and takes time to build back up. Biggest hurdle for McCoy will be the mental part with his footwork and cutting at 100% by fall camp.

Not a Dr. Just been around it in some form or fashion since mine in ‘88 which meant career over back then. They used to keep you stiff for weeks then come to find out that wasn’t right for healing or recovery. Now they bend and put weight within days, assuming no cartilage repair is done. Meniscus repair takes 6 weeks of no bending or weight and prolongs a return from acl.

I don’t know you and you don’t know me. I actually have some insight about who takes care of the athletes. I’m not crapping on the doctors at UT, I have first hand experience with these doctors. Some are good, some great and some not so great. The personal attack was funny to me. Hope you have an amazing day. If you have a problem with what I post, put me on ignore. 😀

I don't think teams want to take a chance on someone like that.

Of course, my Titans did a few years ago with Caleb Farley, who was an injury machine. Since then, I think teams are opting to not take risks.

Either way, he's playing.
Jon Robinson never saw an injured player he didn't love come draft day.

McCoy probably will not play. He is already projected to be first round draft pick. Why would he risk millions of more dollars by competing for the Vols this year. I just don’t see him being completely healthy and he is already making his NIL money this year from the Vols whether he plays or stays on sideline. He will just continue to heal and get ready to go to the NFL combine. Go Vols.
Because he would not want to risk millions. If he sits out and does not play he gets drafted in the later rounds losing millions. If he loves not playing and collecting the NIL he will probably med RS collect NIL and play next year and set himself up for 1st round 2027. It all depends on if he wants to be a 1st round and if he's able to go for big money or play it safe and Med RS and collect the smaller NIL until he's ready for next years draft. He has options, it just that some ppl want it and they want it now in this drive-thru world.

It's amazing how far medical science has come. 20 years ago it would have been a given he wouldn't play till 2026. Now it's a real strong chance he plays by UGA. My guess is he'll see his first action come Arkansas. Hopefully he's rolling by Bama
I was just thinking this. It’s wild that ACL tears were death sentences. Now they are a minor inconvenience.

Now the Achilles tear is the new acl. Not a career killer but definitely a set back. I pray to God I never endure that injury.
