The more things change, the more they remain the same…
He had a much better record than Dooley.
True, Dooley was a worse coach and it's not even close.
Now, if you want to make the argument that Pruitt did more harm to the program than Dooley, I'd listen to that.
Pruitt didn't inherit as much talent as you think. The players that provided the production for Butch's teams (Dobbs, Kamara, Hurd, Malone, Barnett, Reeves-Maybin, Sutton, etc.) were all gone when Pruitt got here, and the talented guys Butch left (Trey Smith, Warrior, Jauan, Darrell Taylor) Pruitt was actually able to get something out of.Pruitt inherited a tonne of talent from Butch. Butch pulled in some huge classes. Pruitt's teams were the most lifeless unentertaining teams in Tennessee football history. Dooley at least assembled an elite offense and some of his teams were fun to watch. Both were terrible head coaches but Pruitt was so bad it was literally painf to watch during his tenure....mainly because of his undying loyalty to trot JG put there every game.
A lot of what you say about Pruitt you could say about Dooley. Players hated Dooley as well, Tyler Bray pre-eminent among them. Pruitt had to cheat to land pretty good recruiting classes; Dooley was a horrendous recruiter (remember that class he had with no offensive linemen in it) and both coaches supposedly poisoned relationships with in-state high school coaches.Pruitt is a worst head coach. Pruitt's last year showed his real record without Butch's players. Give them both the same amount of talent and i will choose Dooley everytime, if for nothing else, he at least knows how to assemble a good offense. Not to mention the fact that players and fellow coaches HATED pruitt as well. An bery unlikeable guy in general.

You know what's fun to watch? Winning. Pruitt's teams were lifeless and entertaining...and won more games than Dooley's did. A lot more. It is hard to overstate just how bad Dooley was; he won 4 SEC games in 3 years (.174). Pruitt, as bad as he was, won SEC games at a .385 clip.

Pruitt is one of the worst coaches in modern SEC history. He is an unlikeable person, ran a boring offense, had no morals, and was a cheater. Overall, he was a horrible HC and a horrible human being. But a quick glimpse of SEC records just shows how much worse Dooley was as a coach.
One thing about Dooley, had he not lost his defensive coordinator 2012 would have been a 2016 type of year for the vols..Both are garbage head coaches for sure though.
Dude - look at the record. You have to make big stretches to somehow say that Pruitt was worse than Dooley.Pruitt inherited a MUCH better situation than Dooley and it's not even that close. They both were terrible, but Pruitt has no business even being a head coach at a high school. No one likes him who has ever worked with him. He is cancer in general for any program while Dooley is a legit coordinator in over his head as a head coach for a P5 team. Pruitt as a defensive coordinator is extremely overrated as well. The guy has rode other coaches talent his entire career.

Did Pruitt actually inherit a better situation than Dooley? Pruitt was hired after the insanity that was Schiano Sunday and inherited a roster that just went winless in SEC play for the worst time in school history. Both Pruitt and Dooley have terrible interpersonal skills.
That's just not factually true. You are thinking of Butch's 2014 and 2015 classes, which were all gone by the time Pruitt arrived. Pruitt came in after classes that were ranked 14th, 17th, and 21st (bridge class) nationally. As I already stated, all the guys that provided all the production for Butch's teams in 2015 and 2016 were gone. Pruitt did not inherit a loaded roster, and of course the athletic department was on fire when he got here. Similar to Dooley.I am looking at everything. Dooley came in after the Kiffin one year fiasco, a total dumpster fire.
Pruitt came in after Butch Jones landed a few of arguably what were Tennessee's best classes ever and gave us a sense of some kind of stability for the first time since Fulmer.
If a new coach flames out from the beginning, you can almost always point to his last year to see what he was really capable of. Not to mention he cheated as well to be that bad and pur roster talent rankings were pretty damn high while he was here.

Heupel would have won an SEC championship with the talent that Pruitt inherited.
