Jeremy Pruitt told Vandy NO

Pruitt seems to know exactly what he was wanting. No to Vandy, No to USCjr and maybe several others. CJP waited till he got a chance at a at a top level program (tho fallen from its prime). He knows you only get one shot at this and he wanted it to be at a place that had the resources, stadium and fan base to compete for championships if he can rise to that level of coaching. I think he has been brooding on that for some time and would rather stay a coordinator winning at the top level, than to take the top slot at a lower level school. The man really really likes to win.

They'll only be your boss and make triple the salary

I may have been wrong, but I was under the assumption this thread was about Pruitt turning down Vandy for their head coaching position. Having said that I am not ruling out all cases but I doubt they will triple the salary of Pruitt. I will even go one step further and say I doubt very many of them will triple the salary of a VFL in the NFL. Please excuse me if I took that statement out of context.

He absolutely did the right thing in turning down vandy, and waiting for an offer like Tennessee to come along. It was really a no brainer decision. As an outsider looking in (taking off my orange tinted glasses and despite us being down for 10 years) I would still see the UT head coaching job as one of the top tier jobs in the SEC, and a top 10 job overall. Tennessee has all the resources to win championships. A great season for Vandy is 6-6 and making a bowl game.

I would not say the Vols were irrelevant over the last four years. They won 29 games and were 2-2 v. UGA and beat Va Tech and took Oklahoma and Texas A&M to OT and were 3-0 in bowl games against the great B1G conference beatng Iowa, Northwestern and Nebraska.

It is easy to see why a coach would pass on Vandy. There is no, zero, nada bit of support from the alumni or administrators at Vandy. Let’s face it, Vandy has money and could build facilities that would make the other teams in the sec cry. They are one of the few institutions that could pay nick enough to coach for them. But, they just don’t seem to want it.
My dads cousin was a teacher of Micro Biology at Vandy. He was a huge Vanderbilt fan and wanted nothing more than for Vandy to beat Tennessee each year. He would have loved to have seen Vandy mount an attack at the national championship. Sadly he passed away having never gotten to see his team even beat Tennessee with any regularly. What is up with sports over there?
Money to make other SEC teams cry....... I think this is a case where "build it, they WON"T come" is the right answer. You must have a big loyal alum very much interested in sports to justify great facilities. Most Vandy grads I have known are much more interested in making money.

Vanderbilt cares more about academics that athletics

I agree with this to a degree. Vandy is only a member of the SEC because they were an original member, and the cash they get from the conference.
I carried my kid to a camp there a few summers ago and there stadium looks like a d1aa school stadium. It is nice but just simply does not hold a candle to the rest of the league.

Tennessee has not been relevant in over 10 years. Why does anybody think that it won't take some kind of "gimmick" system for the Vols to sneak up on teams?

Because "smashmouth" football isnt a "gimmick". CJP is not about sneaking up on teams - its about coaching the players to be able to RUN OVER TEAMS.

It's very difficult to win at places like Vandy without a "gimmick" and Pruitt isn't really a "gimmick" coach. He's also the type of guy that would rather compete for championships as an assistant than compete for bowl games as the head guy. It's funny he rejected it, but it makes sense. I don't think he would've made a very good fit there.
What was Franklin’s gimmick? He appears to just be good at the football coaching

You need a "gimmick" when you can't get players. Historically Tennessee has been able to get players and if anything it should be easier now than in years past as there are more D1 players in the Volunteer state now than ever before. So we don't need a "gimmick" coach, we need one that can recruit players and coach them up. Do we have one now? Who knows, the test starts September 1 in Charlotte, NC.

“sneak up”? The Vols don’t “sneak up” on teams. Teams circle our game. Even at the lowest point in our history it still meant a lot to beat us.

WV is in the dark preparing for us this year. They have no idea what we are going to do to them. After we miss treat them, sneaking up is off the table.

We now have a coaching staff that knows how to assemble a solid football team...develop players by position and win the old fashioned way, by imposing our will upon them by force.
