Jeff Goodman tweets UT has Pitinio Jr. on the short list

Does anyone here believe that Duke, UCLA, Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas and other basketball blue bloods would settle for a Kmart blue light special?

Does anyone here believe Tennessee is anywhere near the same level of any of the schools mentioned right now?

This what I see.

I'd rather take an up and comer than Smith.

What he did was great for Minnesota

2007-2008 20-14 NIT First Round
2008-2009 22-11 NCAA First Round
2009-2010 21-14 NCAA First Round
2010-2011 17-14
2011-2012 23-15 NIT Runner Up
2012-2013 21-13 NCAA Third Round

Athletic Talent in Minnesota Schools is low and it's hard to recruit there

Here are the two guys who Brent Hubbs thinks UT should hire as it's basketball coach, based upon his column yesterday.

I look at that and see pretty much the same as Martin, and Martin is 20 years his junior, meaning with Martin there's an upside, while Smith is winding down. I don't believe for a second he'd have us in the NCAAT "every year", and if you think people were meh on Martin, they'd be even more on Smith. A guy that's a cast off from Kentucky and Minnesota.

Seriously, there's no way this hire would fire up the fanbase.

How in the world is 4 NCAAs in the last 6 years pretty much the same as Martin's 1 NCAA in the last 6 years?

Keeping in mind that Minnesota had been to 4 NCAAs in the 100 years prior to Tubby's arrival.

People keep throwing out the age thing and how could a coach that old be motivated..

6 NCAAs, 2 sweet 16s, 3 round of 32s.

That's Steve Fisher after age 62 at San Diego State.

Tubby may not be my first choice, but he'd be excellent here and we'd be lucky to get him.

P.S.....Ben Howland will be 57 in a few weeks. 5 years younger than Tubby with less accomplishment and far more controversy and potential for NCAA trouble but people think he'd be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Because like I said, Martin is 20 years his junior. Smith isn't taking this program to the next level, and it's obvious to anyone objective that his best days are well past him. He probably has about 2 more seasons at TT before they force him out.

I fail to see how we're lucky to get a guy who our rivals had in his prime. It would be like Kentucky getting Fulmer.

Except Smith never tanked at any of his jobs like Fulmer did here.

If he stays at Texas Tech they'll be in the NCAAs next year or in year 3. And that was a barn fire in a tornado when he walked into it.

We're lucky because a 500 win, HOF coach with the ability to win and stabilize the program would come here.

Taking an older Steve Spurrier sure did hurt South Carolina didn't it?

Spurrier was in much more demand in 2005 than Smith is now. He's not even been mentioned for any job other than this one, which is only because he expressed interest, so that should tell you something.

I guess Missouri will be calling his name then huh?

Smart and Marshall would be sure winners.......but they're definitely "No's!" for this program. Won't do it; can't blame 'em. Pitino's a worthwhile gamble, but he's not moving to Knoxville, either, so leave him down there with Bruce and Zo...........gone. I can't see wagering on Mack or White, so the best choices (just IMHO), are Howland as #1 and Smith as #2. Howland's fun style will attract recruits into TBA and I don't see him as any kind of gamble. He's smart and wins games. Kentucky fired Tubby, but nobody else would've. Let's don't pretend that more than a couple of other schools would've fired him after one less-than-stellar season. Too old? I'm guessing those saying that are still south of forty. If he's still healthy, and I think he is, then he's got some very good years with a lot of W's left for his resume.:huggy:

Howland has cachet and name recognition--he ought to bring in some talent, tho not anywhere close to the talent he got at UCLA. The downside with him is that he apparently had little to no control over the UCLA players while he was there--inmates were running the pen. I don't think he'd make that mistake again. Howland would probably also take the job for something less than huge money--or he might.

Tubby Smith? Good grief: he would be a totally lame hire. Would he want to rejoin the SEC and risk the embarrassment of getting his butt kicked by his former team? I wouldn't. Can't see him doing that. He's also fairly old and can't see him bringing in much talent after a longish stint at minnesota. We'd be better off hiring a youngish mid-major comer.

Except he was mentioned for the Tulsa job before Haith took it and he has been out of work for a total of about 2 weeks in 22 years.

If we got Tubby, and I'm not saying we will, we'd approach 20 wins next year, even with the disaster roster we have now. We'd recruit well, the man signed a top 20 class at Minnesota for goodness sakes. We'd have no issues with the NCAA or any of that. We'd get 8-10 years of stability and NCAA level winning.

I find it interesting that some people love Howland but thing Tubby'd be a bad idea. They are almost the same age, but Tubby has won bigger in his career and never sniffed any of the trouble Howland has.

Tubby has also put something like 20 players in the NBA in his career, another not so bad selling point.

I personally probably would warm up to Tubby if he was our coach, because I can't stay mad forever. But I think from a PR standpoint he'd be maybe a single at best type hire.

I just get a bad taste in my mouth from hiring the former Georgia and Kentucky coach.

Billy Gillespie is very available. Billy would be happy in Knoxville with all the bars and clubs that are around(I read somewhere that he had a drinking problem while head coach at Kentucky).
