According to InsideTennessee.com, Jayson Swain has packed it in, left Bears mini-camp, and is quitting the game of football. He cites a "lack of desire", and has already re-enrolled in classes at UT in order to finish his degree.

Too bad football didn't work out, but props to him for the decision to go get his degree and get on with his life.

Hope everything works out for him... but I thought the Bears cut him awhile back? Do you still get to hang around the mini camps even after you're cut?

Why is he not NFL material? He seemed to be a pretty decent WR at UT. I figured somebody would take a chance on him...i guess not. I hope he gets his degree and sells pharmaceutical drugs for a living or something.

I think he's a bit slower than your typical pro WR and also he's had quite a few injuries that seem to always flare up over and over again.

I agree he's making a smart decision in going back to school to get his degree. What would have been an even better decision was if he had actually used his 4 scholarship years at UT to have earned his degree already. Since he was listed as a senior on last year's roster, I foolishly assumed that he had already earned his degree by now.

Perhaps he was going back to get a second degree. Terry Fair did that.

You know as well as I do that for a variety of reasons, it's not at all uncommon for the average student to take more than 4 years to get a degree, much less a guy who sacrifices as much time in the weight room and on the practice field as is required to play Division 1 football.

This seems like a solvent move. If his heart is not in it he can establish a career in Knoxville and make NFL money over the next 30 years. It will not come as quickly, but I am sure he can get into sales and have his bread buttered.

As this wide receiver class exits, it also gives fans some insight into the actual level of talent UT has fielded over the past few years.

at least he got to spend some time in a pro camp, that's more than a lot of guys ever get

The opportunity to make a 6 or 7 figure salary would be all the "desire" I would need. But I'm sure he has his reasons. Look luck to you, Jayson!

He will make six figures in Knoxville soon enough.

true. many college athletes take the minimum coursework to remain a full time student. Around 12 hrs a semester I think.

My immediate thought was, he was given medical advice to stop playing football because of injuries. Doesn't he have a bad knee?

I talked to my buddy Bob the other day and Bob said, don't be surprised if Jayson graduates and becomes a G.A. at Tennessee or another school. Bob said, that through his dealings around Jayson, Jayson is a student of the game and would make a really good coach.
