Hey guys, mostly a lurker, but I thought VolNation might enjoy this. So there was a Facebook post asking you to list your top 5 favorite athletes, and I ended up putting Jauan Jennings in mine. Someone couldn't believe I had him in there (a dumb LSU Tiger, rest assured) and I started trying to explain his greatness, which is admittedly hard to see from an outside perspective if you didn't follow his whole career or this season. Looking at his highlights, I noticed that so many of his plays were in critical situations, 3rd downs, or times when we really needed him. So I went through the play-by-play on each game (ESPN) and logged each time he got us a first down and converted a 3rd/4th down. I only had time to do this for this most recent season, but if there is enough interest, I can do the others as well, because you can't talk about JJ's career without mentioning the UGA Hail Mary, burning Teez Tabor and beating the Gators, the Auburn game, the Vandy rant, the correspondence between him and Pruitt about getting reinstated, etc. But for this season:

2019: 45 1st downs vs Team: 241 (18.6%); 20 conversions vs Team: 78 (25.6%)

Ga St, L 30-38: 5 1st downs (Team: 21), 2 3rd or 4th down conversions (Team: 8 3rd or 4th down conversions)
9 yd rec (TD drive)
3rd and 8: 34 yd rec; 3rd and 10: 15 yd rec (TD drive)
15 yd rec
18 yd TD rec (TD drive)
Notes: Huge part of 2 TD drives; 25% of conversions

BYU, L 29-26 (OT): 4 1st downs (Team: 20); 2 conversions (Team: 6)
19 yd rec; 4th and 3: 5 yd TD rec (TD drive)
51 yd rec
3rd and 10: 13 yd TD rec (TD drive)
Notes: Huge part of 2 TD drives (and more if we could finish the deal a little better); 33% of conversions

UTC, W 45-0: 1 1st down (Team: 22); 1 conversion (Team: 5)
3rd and 6: 12 yd TD

Florida, L 34-3: 2 1st downs (Team: 12), 2 conversions (Team: 4)
3rd and 4: 27 yd rec
3rd and 14: 19 yd rec
Notes: Sadly, half of the team’s conversions

Georgia, L 43-14: 6 1st downs (Team: 20); 1 conversion (Team: 5)
18 yd rec, 9 yd rec, 12 yd TD rec (TD drive)
21 yd rec
21 yd rec
3rd and 11: 33yd rec
Notes: 37 yds of a TD drive; If only we could have finished drives in this game…

Mississippi State, W 20-10: 2 1st downs (Team: 14); 1 conversion (Team: 7)
22 yd run
3rd and 5: 15 yd rec

Alabama, L 35-13: 2 1st downs (Team: 18); 1 conversion (Team: 7)
16 yd rec (on 1st and 15) (FG drive)
3rd and 8: 10 yd rec (FG drive)
Notes: Critical parts of 2 of our 3 scoring drives

South Carolina, W 41-21: 9 1st downs (Team: 20); 4 conversions (team: 5)
11 yd run (Bonus: 33 yd pass called back)
3rd and 11: 26 yd rec
3rd and 3: 12 yd rec (FG drive)
27 yd rec and 48 yd TD (TD drive)
3rd and 14: 19 yd TD rec (TD drive)
37 yd rec, 5 yd rec (FG drive)
3rd and 3: 12 yd rec (FG drive)
Notes: Absolute gamebreaker, almost half of our 1st downs, 80% of our conversions, big part of 4 of our 6 scoring drives; 75 yards of one of our TD drives. Great highlights as well: both of his TDs put us ahead, and the last one was when he took over the huddle on 3rd and long, held on to the catch after a big hit, and we never gave up the lead again.

UAB, W 30-7: 5 1st downs (Team: 20); 1 conversion (Team: 5)
11 yd rec, 2 yd TD run (TD drive)
15 yd rec
18 yd rec, 3rd and 6: 23 yd rec (TD drive)
Notes: Big part of 2 of our 6 scoring drives (2 of 3 TD drives)

Kentucky, W 17-13: 2 1st downs (Team: 13); 0 conversions (Team: 5)
30 yd rec (FG drive)
19 yd rec (TD drive)
Notes: Not a big game, but a really clutch game; Big part of 2 of 3 scoring drives

Missouri, W 24-20 5 1st downs (Team: 26); 3 conversions (Team: 9)
51 yd rec (TD drive)
3rd and 18: 20 yd rec; (Bonus: 3rd and 9, DPI against Jauan, 1st down); 3rd and 5: 16 yd TD rec (TD drive)
16 yd rec (blocked FG drive)
(Bonus: 3rd and 6: 8 yd rec called back by OPI on Callaway)
3rd and 5: 12 yd rec (to seal the game)
Notes: HUGE part of 2 of 4 scoring drives and the game sealer. Jauan won us this game.

Vandy, W 28-10: 2 1st downs (Team: 16); 2 conversions (Team: 6)
3rd and 5: 6 yd rec (TD drive)
3rd and 12: 50 yd rec (TD drive)
Notes: Kept us alive on half of our scoring drives, Big part of 1 TD drive

Indiana, W 23-22 2 1st downs (Team: 19); 0 conversions (Team: 6)
22 yd rec, 5 yd rec (TD drive)
Notes: Missed first half. Big part of 1 of 2 TD drives (1 of 3 scoring drives in 2nd half)

Thoughts?

He’ll be missed. He was clutch and I thought all our wideouts played very well considering the QB situation. His production and leadership are going to be really hard to replace. I don’t think Palmer can do it alone and it’ll be interesting to see who steps up. BJ coming back is a going to help give us another solid option. I’m guessing him or Keyton will be our Wr2. Gibbs is the X factor this offseason in my eyes and if he can contribute to the group.

Impressive research. My thoughts are that we'll miss him more than most people realize. Will miss JJ the playmaker but may miss JJ the leader more.

Thanks! And agreed. He has a greatness that goes beyond stats, routes, fundamentals, etc. I don't think we turn this season around without him. We certainly dont beat Mizzou, and South Carolina would have been a much harder game. I think looking at the SC game this way really shows his domination more than receptions or yards. He took over the game from a production and leadership standpoint and executed each situation almost perfectly.

Nice job port. We all knew he was a great contributor on and off the field, but your work really highlights what he did on the field.
I expect his leadership has rubbed off on some guys that will help the Vols for the years to come.

Some NFL team will be glad to get him.

JJ will be missed. The question is who is going to step up and be the on field leader of this 2020 Volunteer team. Outstanding post / info Shreveport Vol.

While watching the games it seemed like when we needed a play or a score in the red zone, I was always saying just give JJ a chance. Always seemed he made plays for us if the ball was even close. Not just last year. One of my favorite Vols ever. Some NFL team is gonna get a steal in the draft.

A lot of us played ball with people, who “brought it” and became “possessed”. The dude is a fighter, gonna miss him. I would venture to say , he breathed life back into this program when it was on life support. Thanks for posting. Dude will always have a place in the redemption of Tennessee Football

A couple of months ago I wrote on here that JG's stats were more impressive than they otherwise would have been if it hadn't been for the talent and efforts of the receiving corps.

I am 73 years old ! Been watching Tenn football many years. Jennings was an absolute game changer and was one of the best players Tenn ever had wearing the orange and white.

I think the draft analyst who only put JJ and DT in the mock draft is a absolute idiot. DB, NW, MC and possibly DWA should be drafted!! Especially MC and DB! MC not being on his board made me really question how he gets paid to evaluate talent

What most outsiders don’t realize is how great he was after the catch. Most WRs would catch, take a hit and go down. JJ fought, but he did it with complete control and ball security. He made some crazy plays after the catch that sparked this team and I think next year that will be noticeably missed.

Agreed. Callaway is another player where it might he hard to notice his potential if you're just doing a national write-up and relying on season stats. What they don't see is his incredible single-game performance against Ga Tech, massive hops, and maybe not even his great average or athletic ability in highlight catches. He's got great potential if he has a reliable QB and can gain consistency.
