Wasn't sure where to post this, but some merge thread will eventually become massive here on this topic.

Has anyone talked about Jason Garrett?

I'd like to know what some of our guru's think about him and whether or not we could get him from the Cowboys.

Many say he's the highest paid O-coord in the League, but I don't know what $ amount that is, but it seems we could match that and then some.

What do those of you who are more 'in the know' on coaches think about him?

I've thought about this guy a lot. Really smart guy, young, and ambitious. I would risk a swap for Fulmer.

We need to set our sights high to beat the likes of Nick Saban.

This whole who's the best non-BCS head coach is tiring. Then, people talk like Cowher would come, which seems quite aspirational.

This guy is somewhere between those extremes in terms of having proven himself.

And, we're not talking about the O-coord job anymore. So, if UT is all that we keep saying it is, then it really comes down to what some aspiring coach wants to accomplish in his lifetime. I don't know Jason or his career objectives.

Did you mean Cowher?

Nobody knows if he will come or not. Point is, we will NEVER know if we don't approach him with a blank check. I didn't think Saban would go to Bama.

Yea... sorry typo.

That's how I think we have to approach. Offer this guy the reigns to a program that in which we all know he can succeed.

Is he the right guy for the blank check?

He has a contract that "guarantees" him the HC job at Dallas when Phillips retires. Also is the highest paid OC in the league. He is not moving to college ball!

Pretty sure Jerry Jones has this guy locked in as the next HC in Dallas.....could have happened last year....certainly apprears that he gets the job next year....unless they win the Super Bowl this year. Then it may take another year or so for him to get the job. Jason is a hot property and Dallas will have to protect him or he will be the HC in the NFL outside of the D.

Gooooo Boys..

I think Jason Garret is a bigger long shot than Gruden (which I think is a pipe dream) and Cowher.

Jerry Jones isn't going to let a young talented coach like that get away. Hamilton vs. Jerry Jones. You kidding me? Saban was a coach on a failed Dolphins team. Garret is the leader of one of the best offenses in the NFL, but I hear he flew into McGee Tyson one time, so we got that going for us.

Saban left. The college game has a different appeal to coaches than does the League.

Is he the kind of guy who would like recruiting, rolling his sleeves up and coaching players up, building his own dynasty in the best league in college foortball, proving himself against the best coaches in CFB, and all those kinds of things that Saban loves... and obviously does well?

WHy would an NFL team bet on Garrett over Cowher?

Gruden is no Cowher.

The only NFL team betting is the Cowboys. He's an old Cowboys guy, Aikman's back up, a link back to the good old days. Above all that the guy is a hell of a coach.

I don't really understand what your asking anyway?

Well, I'm not asking to get a baseless opinion that says he's not interested unless you have some facts to support it.

The guy is still unproven as a head coach and is a rising star. He's not failing at Tampa Bay and he has not retired after wiining a Super Bowl. There's a big difference in his profile and your comparisons.

Why are you trying to answer?

Saban jumped from a sinking ship. Dallas, on the other hand, is the highest valued franchise in all of pro sports. I hope you are right! But I just don't see it happening.

Cowboys make Garrett highest-paid assistant in NFL

You do the math, genius.

Saban is a proven example of how some fit the college game and some fit the League.

Garrett is unproven as a head coach at either level.

The potential for handing him the reigns to the Cowboys may be part of Jerry Jones' sales tactics to keep Garrett as O-coord as long as he can, but Jones' history with hiring proven HC's would be part of the evidence as to why Cowher would be hired over an unproven head coach like Garrett.

Wade Phillips never won his division prior to be hired to lead the Cowboys. His career record at that point was 49-43 with 0 playoff wins. That's not exactly what I'd call proven.

Did you whip out the abacus and do the numbers on those pay scales?

Check the Dallas HC before him and the two before that.

Wade Phillips would clearly be an 'experienced hire' in comparison to a 'rookie' NFL HFC hire.

But, I would be interested in what you think about Garrett at UT.

Some of us can do such advanced math without an instrument. If you study, you too may learn. Don't give up based on having so many apparent early life failures.

I believe you said "proven", which is something Wade Phillips is not. I don't know enough about him to know if he'd be a good recruiter. I don't really care to learn because the chances of him coming here are microscopic.

From the guy who said, "Fulmer would be a rainmaker at Vandy" Not to worry, big daddy, my pockets are straight.
