From the Tennessean
"Fulmer said yesterday that senior cornerback Jason Allen would miss the remainder of the season. Allen suffered a dislocated left hip in the second quarter against Georgia and had to be carted off the field.
Allen was released from UT Medical Center on Saturday night and now faces an extensive recovery process. He'll be on crutches for at least five to six weeks and unable to put any weight on his hip during that time.
An MRI on Saturday didn't reveal a fracture, but he will be further evaluated and undergo an additional battery of tests in the next few days.
Allen told the Vols' medical staff that he felt his hip pop while tackling Georgia tight end Leonard Pope. He said he put it back into place on the field before trainers and doctors got to him.
Allen, who nearly turned pro last year before changing his mind at the last minute and returning for his senior season, had secured an insurance policy during the offseason.
Hip injuries can be especially difficult for defensive backs to recover from because of how important it is to have the proper hip swivel in coverage. But former Tennessee safety Deon Grant suffered a similar hip injury while playing for the Carolina Panthers earlier in his career and is still playing in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
"Jason's like a big brother to the entire secondary," junior cornerback Jonathan Wade said. "It hurt me a lot to see him go down. I look over to him every chance I get for inspiration. To see him go down like that and not be able to carry himself off really hurt."
Fulmer said the combination of sophomores Roshaun Fellows and Inky Johnson would step into Allen's cornerback spot. Fellows was the first to replace Allen against Georgia, but Johnson finished the game.
Allen, a two-time captain, was one of the Vols' strongest leaders and wasn't afraid to challenge players on either side of the ball.
"We'll miss him on defense with his energy and enthusiasm," Fulmer said. "We'll miss him on special teams, where he's been a real factor for us, and we'll miss him in the locker room as a leader.
"If I know Jason, he'll be around and part of what we're trying to do, encouraging and working at it."
Senior defensive end Jason Hall said others would have to step up their games.
"It will be tough to play without him," Hall said. "But we have great character on this team, a lot of seniors and juniors. We have a lot of guys who know how to take it back to the practice field and work, and that's what we'll do."
