He maybe, maybe, could have had a year like Nico had last year. His arm strength, athleticism, and processing speed are all worse than Nico's (and Nico's processing speed is pretty low to begin with).
Nico had much better coaching. Jarret had to suffer through the worst coaching in UT athletics history. That would likely make a big difference.

I've wondered what he could have done under Heup.
Not good. He was not really mobile at all. He would have had more open receivers to throw to. But you gotta be mobile to run this offense. It's at least one of the reasons Bailey was such a poor fit too.

I factored that in. JG would have had better coaching, but is physically limited relative to Nico and has similar processing issues. Heup would have put JG in better situations, been a better playcaller, etc. He probably would not have thrown as many interceptions and would have had a better running game behind him, but JG would still be limited in what he could do.

Under Butch/Pruitt, Nico probably would have performed like JG, despite the better physical talent.

Sorry but he lost my love when HE. JG changed the called play and tried to sneak it in on the Bama goal line. Fumble the ball and gave up a td going the other way. Totally selfish and showing he was NOT a team player !
That's pretty petty. I'm sure even Jeremy aight has moved on from that one.

To me, the fact that JG had 3 different OCs during his time at UT - literally 3 different OCs, had to play for that hot mess JP, and the fact that he stuck around as long as he did is enough to make me really appreciate his time as a Vol.

He really played his heart out but he wasn't a consistently good QB (he had some games were he looked great). I am not sure if that was just on coaching or just something with his game.

Despite that, it was always hard to hate a player that was really putting his heart into the game to be successful. Also glad to see him doing podcasts. It was probably a fun career move for him but in a lot of ways it is a good way of healing for both him and the Vol fanbase. I Subscribed to him and will support him.

JG wasn't as highly touted as Nico but he wasn't a scrub recruit. He was a high 4* QB from what I understand.

Tennessee has never had a challenge recruiting QBs, we have had more problems trying to recruit the supporting case around the QBs. Heupel has been changing that. Honestly, the area Tennessee struggles the most in historically has been the Secondary. Even with Heupel, that unit has improved dramatically. Offensive line is the second area Tennessee has traditionally struggled with.

Dobbs seemed to do fine with it…. Guarantano could not process the field fast enough and that didn’t change when he went to wsu. Nico was head and shoulders better than jg ever was as a true freshman.

Saw one of JG’s best games at UK… threw for over 300 yards in brutal cold, windy conditions… I think the next week he did the same against Vandy.

JG, despite being touted as a "dual threat" QB, was basically a statue in the pocket. The misevaluation there (granted, not just by Butch's staff but basically everyone) is still baffling to me.

I think a lot of his star ranking was based off of that, which turned out to be 100% not the case. He was a fraction the athlete that Nico is, regardless of what his recruiting ranking was. Ultimately what doomed JG wasn't his lack of athleticism though but his lack of processing speed and pocket awareness, and that is also what Nico struggles with. Any QB with the combo of lack of processing speed + lack of pocket awareness is screwed, no matter how great an athlete or how big their arm is (e.g., Joe Milton).

It's not lack of intelligence; more a lack of reaction time and being able to pull the trigger.
Having an overbearing father doesn’t help anyone be decisive or assertive. It usually results in hesitancy and self doubt. Heupel was the best hope Nico had for overcoming that. But his Father ruined that for him as well

I have to give that kid some credit, he took a lot of hits from both opposing teams and from Vol fans (myself included). He was here with one of the worst coaches (and person) ever, and he doesn't seem to be jaded. Huge props for that.
