Rushing three in a big passing spot IS always utterly stupid, and you'd think DCs would get that is stupid--but many still do it. You give an even mediocre QB a lot of time to throw, and they will complete a pass as nobody covers well for very long. It is stupid.
RE the Defensive stats comparision with pa. state, doesn't strength of schedule factor into how one views the stats? Check out pa. state's schedule. It was laughable--a bunch of bad teams. I pretty sure Shoop wouldn't have had the same stat line playing our schedule.
Somebody did just break the average opposing offense rankings down a page pack showing we were on par with each other. While yes the sec is viewed as an overall better conference it is not the end all be all number one in everything stat. I'm pretty sure only 2 offenses we faced were top 20. The rest were not offensive powerhouses.
I would put the information describing some of these columns here so it's more evident to people. That way they don't have to go find the text describing "front 7 havoc rank".
Havoc rate measures the percentage of plays that end in a tackle for loss (including sacks), forced fumble, or tipped/intercepted pass.
Penn State played in a weaker conference but also has inferior talent. They didn't get a whole lot of help from thier O this season either. Shoop has made a carrier out of doing more with less. I would love to see what he could do with comparable talent to his opponents. That and strealing him would absolutely ruin Franklin.
Jancek has done a good job for us, especially on 3rd down, but he has underachieved against better teams at times. I hope he lands on his feet, but it's time to upgrade. Shoop looks to be that guy if we can get him. Considering what he did at Vandy just imagine what he can do with our roster.
Same was said about Butch and he has so far only managed to beat one elite SEC team in 3 years - even though he had at least equal talent (for example vs UF). However, recruiting has been great and perhaps things will change next year vs elite SEC teams - they better change since it's doubtful Butch can survive another home loss to UF - not when we are loaded on talent and all key players have experience.
He Beat SC twice when they were good and UGA this year. The 1st SC win he had inferior tanlent. The UF losses hurt. Bama has better talent than anyone in the county. With the dumpster fire we were when he took over he has done pretty darn well and his trajectory has been upward. Now he seems to be making big time coaching upgrades. Duo you really think he will be on the hot seat if we lose to UF again but go 10-2? i doubt it?
No, and only some idiot logic would allow that to happen.
he's already coached vs the sec, for 3 years, with vanderbilt "talent", juxtaposed to 3 bad vandy offenses....and coordinated, on average, the 20th best defense in the country. It's already settled...the guy can coordinate a defense in the sec which can lead to wins despite his team having an atrocious offense.
And just for good measure, in his first year at penn state under franklin last year, he had the #2 defense in the country (and followed that up with the #14th best this year) with very little talent under bad circumstances.....penn state's 3 classes before he/they got there were ranked #35, #51 and #43 on rivals.

Yes, and half (6, and South Carolina just missed at 99) the teams we faced didn't even have offenses in the top 100. Tennessee faced a slightly weaker schedule in opposing offenses, and our defense finished in the 30s compared to Penn State in the teens. Shoop easily got more production from lesser talent!
