Jancek on 4th & 14 Call

That is one of those plays that gets lost in the shuffle. He got the ball off just before his knee hit down. If we could have gotten that for a sack, it would have been about 4th and 17 and they would have had to burn their last timeout....which would have let us catch our breath and get on the same page.

I do not believe Butch has used a timeout wisely in any of these two loses. He really is a horrible game day coach. I mean if he isn't calling the plays on O or D, then he should understand game flow and when you have a chance to win the game on D. I think you call to and get them over there to discuss

We should have rushed four, and played zone. I don't really have a problem with the play call. The play just wasn't executed well (no shiznizzle right?)

Heard from someone who should know. The guy identified by Gary Danielson as the "spy" while 3 rushed was supposed to be rushing the QB but didn't.

If this is true. I appreciate the coaching staff for not throwing the guy under the bus. Either way, it should have never come down to that play and even on that play, it's just a first down if the 3 DBs don't look like the 3 blind mice stumbling around the field.

@TennesseeBeat: D-Coordinator John Jancek said he made the play-call on 4th-and-14 one too many times. Said it was the same play call that produced a sack..

@wesrucker247: Refreshing to hear #Vols DC John Jancek be candid about Florida meltdown. Said he went to the well too many times on a call and got burned.

Nice to see. Hope he changes it up and does better. Glad he takes responsibility as well.

Wow...finally, a breath of fresh air...thanks coach! :salute:

There's no way this game can be put on the DC. You can only hold off teams so long. It's up to the offense to keep drives going.

The call was bad BUT if the players execute there it's just a first down and not a TD. Don't get me wrong I think most of the issues with losing this game was on the game management but that's one instance where the players could and should have influenced the outcome of the game.

Hopefully, we'll learn to start passing the ball to extend drives and keep the defense fresh. Good to hear Jancek be humble though.

This times 10! Butch doesn't seem to understand that if what you were doing for three qtrs has worked, then you should probably keep doing it through the 4th qtr. All of these 3-and-outs in the 4th qtr are killing our defense.

Barnett basically sacked him on the play before, then the next play we rush 3. Bizzare

you NEVER, EVER, EVER just rush three. I've been preaching this for years, and I coached high school defense for 15 years. If you are only going to rush three, you might as well rush nobody.

It was a zone, or at least from the way they played it it looked like zone. I think it should have been straight man with maybe a rover and as much pressure on their freshman QB as possible. Make him play quicker than he wants and be precise when he does! To lay back like they did just let UF do what they wanted to do...stupid. Hate "read and react" crap, make them react!

They played the exact same defense on third down that they did on 4th (rush 3, use a spy, and drop 7 into coverage). The difference was that Barnett was able to make an individual effort on 3rd down to pressure the QB. My guess is that Jancek "went back to the well" because it was successful in just the play before.

UF seemed to know what they were doing on every 4th down and they were able to execute just what was drawn up...inexcusable really.

Absolutely on the defensive play calling. Just stop one of the 5 fourth down conversions and UT wins.
This is the same nonsense Jancek ran at UGA in the 4th QTR. As I've said before. Butch has to make adjustments on the defensive side of the ball or we will lose more.

27 against UF should always win.

I'm no football coach, but a spy on 4th and 14 should probably be deeper than 5 yards. Letting a player catch it in the 14-17 yard area in that down and distance is unacceptable. That's on the coaches. The lackluster effort after the catch was unacceptable on the players' part. Anyways, we shouldn't have allowed this Florida offense more than 17 to be honest.

We used a spy on 4th and 14.
I can't imagine that ever making sense around mid field.
The likelihood of a run v a pass makes that call asinine.
Our 4th down stats period.... asinine.

:good!: Just removes the spy from being in the play at all, putting more pressure on everyone else. But again, it just invites the offense to take their time and execute a designed play...which of course they did.

I just watched that play again...I have to say it wasn't such a bad playcall given the situation..but the players on the field were way too tired to execute. I understand we aren't that deep, but I would rather stick a less talented but fresh player out there. I mean the receiver just stopped and turned around to make the catch and our guys were 5 yards off. Hopefully, we'll learn to start passing the ball to extend drives and keep the defense fresh. Good to hear Jancek be humble though.

Worse call since Pete Carroll call in the super bowl. this cost us the game---period. should have been a jail house break blitz---no excuse for that. 7 yards to the great receiver also hurt us bad. I understand we are putting a package this week so we can pass more. Sounds like after the OKL game when OC said it was Blitz-ville and we will work on a package to stop that. Seems we are great coaches after the game. What happen to Spring and fall pratice? my, my !!!!

No, we have an IQ problem with our OC. no one would make a decision not to blitz in this case. Another reason we lost, 7 yards to world class receivers. Games change during the course of the game opponents coaches are thinking constantly and what was working for us, may stop, we seem to have a game plan and stick to it. we cannot get thinking going on our sidelines. we have to coach as the game develops. By the 4th quarter they are smarter than we are.

If you're going to play man and only rush 3 guys, it's fairly likely the qb takes off.

The thing about his comments that's troubling is his REASONING.....is he actually saying that he called that defense because he expected us to get a sack with jusst 3 pass rushers???????

just watch some other football games out there or look at some films and COUNT how many teams actually sit back in zone coverage with the game on the line...on a 4th down and 10-15 yds...

ONE EXAMPLE:

Alabama and Georgia in the SEC championship game a few years ago....with the game on the line and time even running out---BAMA BLITZES and their LB actually tips the ball...which gets caught, but they win....

And I know that it wasn't 4th down in that game--but it's the situation that I'm speaking about!
