I agree completely. Dobbs has to make strides in his passing accuracy, but Worley needed to as well. Oline was not all the problem. With that said, Worley kept getting up and playing. Tougher than most.

Look - Dobbs accuracy will improve as he plays in games - not practice. Game speed against another team and going against your own guys in practice are two wildly different things. Dobbs knows the offense. He has to learn the little things that make a difference by playing. He can only develop chemistry with receivers at game speed, when it really matters. I'm calling an Allen Iverson audible on this one.

As Sparty said - gamer. Will take a gamer every day of the week over a strong practice player. Dobbs is a very intelligent young man. He was probably very bored sitting behind Worley and Peterman getting second and scout team practice. Instead of lucking into the role like last season, he grabbed the ring away from Peterman this season. Thankfully.

When we were facing these athletic quarterbacks, we were saying, ‘Man, we want Dobbs back there...."

I get it now: our D was trying to tell the OC all along (games 1-7) to play Dobbs in the games ("burn the redshirt / he's practicing lights out on us), but the OC wouldn't listen, wouldn't listen...wouldn't listen, until finally game 8 !

My personal opinion is when Jancek used the word "weeks" it was just semantics. These coaches are so busy that weeks run together and go so fast. It really seems like it's been about 3 weeks since I boarded a plane for OU and it's been almost 2 months. I can only imagine what its like for coaches. The fact that he mentioned USU and ASU tells me they've seen this for awhile.

The only problem with your logic is that it was not Coach Jake's decision. Butch wanted to redshirt Dobbs because the future is insanely bright. We could probably win a national championship behind him if he could be a redshirt senior. This is a cost analysis thing. Most people would rather burn the redshirt and get eight wins because they're desperate. I'd rather have national title chances in '17 than a eight win year this year.

I disagree. A QB is only as good as he looks in shorts throwing passes against air in March. It's too bad Riley Ferguson didn't stick around... given all those glowing practice reports, he could've been the greatest QB since Jamarcus Russell.

Dobbs is only a sophomore, he still has 2 more years to play. I doubt he would go pro early. The red shirting talk is garbage. You should only redshirt a player if have enough players for that position. And never redshirt the better player. If this happened I have to question our coaching staffs decision making. Why not win now? We would've beat the crap out of uf and Uga.

We would of still lost to those schools. Would you rather have eight wins this year, or a national title chance in '17? This is actually an economics question. This all has to do with opportunity costs. Our coaches would rather have title implications in 2017, then win eight games this year...

You know that scene from the movie Dumber and Dumber where the girls on the bus stopped and said they were looking for 2 guys to run lotion on them. Then they told them there is a town that way and to the effect there is going to be 2 lucky guys.

I feel like based on this the coaches were watching Dobbs thinking "we really need a QB who can do all of this.... Wish we could find one"

Dobbs sucked in practice just like Alan Iverson did when he played basketball. Then he would go in a game and put up 30 points. Butch says Dobbs has looked better in practice the last two weeks.

Dobbs' move to step inside the rushing defensive end when he hit Croom, rather than bounce outside and risk a sack or take himself away from a good throw was very telling for me. That was pure instinct and great to see. Many qbs freeze therez throw it too early or bounce it outside where the up field DE can cause a problem.
Really good instinctive and gutsy football play.

It's so nice to know that Sparty makes a very good point between practice and game time, and other than complimenting Dobb's as a gamer, keeps the comment generic... to only have two posters unnecessarily posts negatives about another player.

I'll never understand why some posters are seemingly compelled to insult our players when it's not only uncalled for, but in this case not even pertinent to the discussion which was about Dobbs? smh

Dobbs started four or five games last year, gents. I have no doubt that he would have been fine starting from game 1, and our season would have been substantially different had he played early, AS HE SHOULD HAVE. You can't redshirt your best player at any position, and especially QB, and especially when you are trying to rebuild a program. Jones made a HASH of QB situation, even if most don't want to say it, but, yea, nothing to do but move ahead. Mobile QBs are huge in college football--and yet Jancek sounds like he's just now realizing that.

Yeah that play and the pump fake against Bama is pure instinct. Either you have it or you don't. Dobbs has it. He looks so comfortable out there now. He's no longer thinking, he's just playing. His confidence and the rest of the teams confidence is now off the charts. Definitely a turning point for this program.

It's amazing how smart everyone has gotten based on a performance against a God awful defense.

Dobbs looks good, but I'm sure there were legit concerns this summer or he wouldn't have been beaten out by Worley.

Clearly, if Dobbs was ready to play against Utah St he would have played. Also, I don't think coaches expected o-line to struggle like it has. They went with Worley because he's a senior and is more accurate from the pocket.

Line struggles more than expected... Dobbs makes great strides....Worley hurt..... Dobbs starts.

Go Vols. Go Butch Jones!!!
