Interesting:

-- Jancek said quarterback Joshua Dobbs has carved up the defense in practice whenever the Vols have played against him whenever the Vols have been preparing for an athletic quarterback.

“Josh has been ripping us on defense for the last few weeks,” Janceck said. “We played Utah State, we played Arkansas State, we played Alabama now with an athletic quarterback. We do these things called service periods when the offense run plays for us and the defense runs certain plays for the offense. When we were facing these athletic quarterbacks, we were saying, ‘Man, we want Dobbs back there.’ I’ll tell you what, we were running some plays at our defense, we were running the jet sweep, and pulling linemen, going back the other way, he’s faking the jet, Dobbs is taking off and going the other way, and we were like, ‘We can’t tackle this guy.’ So to have an athletic quarterback is so challenging.”

Hopefully he does this to the opposition the rest of the year.

Do I need to ask the obvious question?

I think it was answered:

osh has been ripping us on defense for the last few weeks

If he'd said "all season", I would ask the same question you're inferring. Instead, it seems Dobbs hit a turning-point a few weeks ago. Butch was probably trying to see if (a) it would stick, and (b) if he could get through the season without burning the redshirt so late in the season--again.

I have to imagine that this quote is not being used in the context jancek intended

I saw that, but then I saw where he was the practice qb for Utah state and impressed them... That's the first game.

Must be that Dobbs dominates vs our defense because he is not accurate in practice (according to our coaches). So our defense is apparently built to only dominate vs accurate QB's.

My theory is CBJ talked to Dobbs and parents and told him we will redshirt you this year so we have you 3 more years. So when u graduate in 3 years, You can get graduate school paid. Just a thought.

Rucker says Dobbs was throwing passes into the ground in fall camp.

We didn’t know how good Josh Dobbs was.

I definitely didn't know how good Josh Dobbs was. In fact, after watching him bounce pass after pass into the turf in preseason camp, there were more than one handful of days I walked off Haslam Field wondering if Josh Dobbs was any good.

Coaches did not know what they had to start the year. Let's end this debate about whether Worley or Dobbs should have started week 1. Key point is that he is playing good now. Let's get these next three Wins to close the season strong.

Good point. But that's just talking about ball-handling and running ability. I wonder how well he was passing. I wonder if he had the full package that CBJ thought was needed to win the game.

I don't know. Maybe Butch and the staff made a grave error by not starting him game-1. All I know is I'm excited to see him play, I expect to win the rest of the games, and I can't wait until next year after seeing the last 1-3/4 games.

Butch may have made mistakes, may not. But he's definitely the guy that has built us to the point that I'm excited. So, I'll cut him some slack and see where it goes.

Well my theory is that Dave Hart told Butch to do what he felt like he needed to do to ensure future success. They knew with this schedule and this young team that things would be tough. So you may ask, why didn't they just keep playing Peterman if this was the case? It's easy to say your going to keep to your plan, but losing sucks. I think Butch said to heck with it, if I don't make a change we will go 4-8. that's just my theory, but it would explain alot:idea:.

Gamer. When instincts kick in, Dobbs can get it done. When he's being redshirted, counting steps and working on techniques, releases, and throwing angles in practice, he's not going to look as good. And some players look great in those same drills but aren't gamers.

He mentioned Utah State and Arkansas State. 1st 2 games = all season.

I recall the videos from fall camp as well. Peterman and Worley were doing fairly well. Dobbs was overthrowing his receivers in this case. It's an extremely small sample size, but it stuck with me.
