westwords "James Pearce is a big guy, 6-5 and 242. There is enough of him for three or four Tennessee coaches to share the credit for his accomplishments and claim an investment in lofty projections." Marvin West's Great Piece on Tennessee's Best Defensive Player since ; Eric Berry?? westwords click & enjoy Yall!
Extraordinary talent and coached by Rodney Garner. Pretty damn good combination!

Why do we hold Berry and White above John Henderson? The guy won the Outland Trophy.
Why do we hold any of them over Doug Atkins. Possibly the greatest defensive player of all time. Mr Atkins told me at a golf tournament that they did not keep stats on sacks when he was playing. He went on to say that he had multiple games a season that he would have six or seven tackles of the quarterback during a game. I was thinking about that years later and realized that he might have had multiple 20 plus sack seasons that he will never get credit for.

I praying this kid keeps his head on straight and surrounds himself with the right people.

He’s the most talented EDGE Defender since Jevon Kearse or Clowney imo.

Just listen to Rodney and trust his words.

You are right. Doug Atkins was possibly the best defensive lineman ever. He was the most feared , according to players (QB's) of that era. NOBODY wanted any part of Doug. His workout routine consisted of hoisting a cold one, and another , and another. Imagine Atkins today with all the nutrition experts and training , and a little less carousing. Wow.

I guess it’s because most people were not alive to see him play, there are few stats, and very little to read that would distinguish him from any other player of his time. I believe you guys, but I have no reference for comparisons.

I’m saying this out of respect. The only thing I can picture when you guys talk about Atkins is “Bill Brasky” from SNL.

Sorry, this post was from my perspective, not VN's. Big John was IMO, a solid player at UT but, an NFL disappointment - enough so that I could never put him on the Mt Rushmore of Tennessee Talent. (and sorry if you disagree w me. Hope you are ok that I am allowed to have my own opinion Adam)

Well said. He played for a lot of years for a very bad program but the other two did win some awards in the pros that Henderson never did.

My perspective is that I don’t want him to be forgotten. I was a kid when my dad took me to the TSSAA basketball tournament, where Pearl Cohn made the semifinals. John Henderson signed my TN Starter jacket and I’ve been enamored with him since. I hope people will remember that he and Haynesworth were a part of what could be the most talented defensive line we have had.

NFL disappointment? Bro made 2 pro bowls and a 2nd team all pro. Played 9 years for bad teams. Do you know how few players make one Pro Bowl much less 2? Especially at DT. For his position he was dominant.

I watched a YouTube short of him the other day with a trainer, smacking him in the mouth until he bled to get him pumped up. That was pretty freaking awesome.
He was also a MONSTROSITY of a man!

I love John Henderson. I remember in 2001, Tennessee was preparing to go to Gainesville for the only late season matchup with the Gators (9-11) and Big John Henderson said "We are going down there and we are going to beat Florida". (paraphrased) The story was in USA Today. And Henderson, Hanesworth, and Co backed it up! Of course Travis Stephens' near 300 yard day helped !

I'm saying you're argument for Henderson being better was he won the Outland but Berry won the Thorpe

I didn’t mean to say Henderson was better. I was trying to say that he had similar college achievements.

He was definitely a great DT. Being that he played DT is probably part of the reason the others get talked about more. Berry is the best DB we've ever had IMO. I know some others may not agree but he had the stats and passed the eye test

Something special about #27 @UT
Yes, there is. I hate that jerseys get retired. I love seeing that number on the field and reminiscing about Al, or Foster when I see it. Would like to see even 61 & 62 out there. The numbers could still be remembered @ the stadium.
