Vols Land Commitment from Speedy 4-Star WR | Rocky Top Insider

Impact Report: 2020 WR Jalin Hyatt | Rocky Top Insider

The addition of Tee Martin to Tennessee’s coaching staff as wide receivers coach is already paying off on the recruiting trail.

On Saturday afternoon, four-star wide receiver Jalin Hyatt took to Twitter to announce his commitment to the Vols. Martin is his primary recruiter for Tennessee, and Hyatt gives UT their first commitment from a true wide receiver in the 2020 class.
According to the 247Sports rankings, Hyatt is the No. 271 overall prospect, No. 50 wide receiver, and No. 5 prospect in the state of South Carolina. He’s a three-star on their composite rankings as of now.

Hyatt was committed to Virginia Tech at one point, announcing his commitment to the Hokies on February 2nd. But he decommitted from Virginia Tech on June 30th, a little over a week after taking an unofficial visit to Tennessee.

The 6-foot, 162-pound receiver was again on UT’s campus on Saturday, and he decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on his announcement.

Hyatt plays for Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, South Carolina. That’s the same high school current Vol cornerback Bryce Thompson played at, and the two were teammates during the 2017 season, Thompson’s senior year.

The speedy wide receiver was already considered a solid prospect coming out of his junior campaign, but his performance at camps really turned heads. Hyatt was timed running a 4.31-second 40-yard dash at a regional camp for Nike’s The Opening back in April, and he measured a nearly 35-inch vertical leap.

That speed and explosiveness shows up on his film, too.

Hyatt is a very good route runner, especially for a high school junior. He can run fade routes, post routes, digs, comeback routes, and he’s dangerous in the red zone in the corner of the end zone. He knows how to make catches in traffic and shows good body control. Hyatt also has very good speed and uses that to his advantage a lot. He has game-changing speed from the receiver position. He’s a little thin and will need to put on weight, but his speed and solid football IQ make him stand out.

Not only does Hyatt stand out on film, but his numbers are also very impressive. In 13 games as a junior, Hyatt caught 71 passes for 1,316 yards and 21 touchdowns according to MaxPreps. In his last two seasons with Dutch Fork, Hyatt has 114 receptions for 2,263 yards and 31 scores.

Hyatt’s commitment gives Tennessee 13 known commitments in their 2020 class. He’s the first true wide receiver to commit to the Vols, though three-star athlete Jimmy Calloway is expected to start out at wideout in college, and in-state athlete Darion Williamson could play there as well.

Not sure if the coaches will have the luxury of redshirting him but a couple years in the strength and conditioning program and twenty pounds of muscle will be a huge benefit with our SEC schedule. If he can maintain that speed he may be a great one for us. I know it takes a lot more than just speed and strength to be great but it sounds like he comes from a good family and has a good head on his shoulders so he has a lot going for him.

Not that I've watched hundreds of highlight vids, but his route-running is the best I've seen from a high school junior. For a 4.31-sprinter, Hyatt shows football maturity in how he appropriates his speed. He also shows confidence in his hands, whether in supination or pronation.

Couldn't help noticing that his QB appeared accurate on a lot of throws, too.

Dutch Fork is the best high school in South Carolina.....as a current SC resident, I hear alot about them during high school ball season from co-workers. Alot of Scar and Clemson fans are a tad annoyed that neither Muschamp or Dabo picked up on this kid. Everyone is also amazed he's only a 3* given his obvious skills and speed.

I know it gets said alot, but this kid really is a diamond in the rough and his rating really doesn't matter.

Scar fans are also annoyed they let Thompson get out of Dutch Fork last year after muschamp just mysteriously didn't want him (supposedly) and now they see how good of a CB he really is. My coworker said "strange how Will Muschamp seemingly doesn't want play makers off the best high school team in our state..."

3* with below average offer list. Glad you’re pumped. I’m not. Another recruit we’ll have to hope exceeds his recruiting profile

I get where you’re coming from and agree we really need to pick it up on the recruiting trail to even have a chance of competing week in and out, but you can’t teach 4.31 40 speed.

That’s world class. This is a good get, especially if he is coachable!

I think you put too much trust in the services. JMO. There’s no guarantee we’ll even be able to keep him with a 4.3 40 and good change of direction. His offer list is sure to explode his senior year. A lot of 3* are just simply kids they don’t know much about because they are busy creating hype for the kids with offers from the likes of Bama. Don’t fool yourself into thinking they “evaluate” everyone.

I don't have much faith in the rating services, but you have to wonder in this case--a kid with speed, adequate size, hands, a productive junior season, and performing in a high-profile football program--why 3 stars and a #50 WR evaluation is justified.

Time will tell... whether his stock rises or his potential is negated by heretofore unreported issues.

Not sure why you are being pissy. He is one of the fastest players in the 2020 class (ran a 4.27 before they asked him to run again). Sure he needs some meat on him but he is tall enough with good hands if his tape says anything and did we mention SPEED! No, he wont be 5* all SEC on day one but thats why we have Tee Martin and Chaney. I feel pretty darn confident that they can develop players who have the right tools to start with, unlike previous staff.

Stop being such a sour puss, Fade. I would like him to be a 5* too for our rating but seems clear that this staff (with 3 #1 RotYs) is recruiting based on what they want not just stars. Eventually that should play out on the field. And why do you think Clemson didnt pull the trigger? Maybe at 19 they are starting to look full.

I really like Hyatt but the ranking and more importantly his offer list is very confusing. He has camped and been laser timed at 4.31. Thats freakng fast. His film shows pretty good route running skill. All this begs the questions, why isnt he mire highly rated and why doesnt he have a much better offer list? There cannot be that many guys in the 2020 class that run a 4.31 40.
