Jalen requested a redshirt to rehab and strengthen his knee after 2 surgeries. Coach Ray denied the request. If he graduates in spring, he should be eligible to transfer to any D1 school (hopefully TN) for the 14-15 school year. Pretty crappy move by Ray and MSU IMO.

According to twitter:
Matthew Stevens (@matthewcstevens) tweeted at 8:56 PM on Tue, Sep 17, 2013:
Spoke to Jalen Steele's mom, Terrara Kimber. Said Steele was given a set of choices by MSU coach Rick Ray. He choose to leave MSU program.

Yea, here's a pretty good summary...

“@matthewcstevens: Mississippi State announces guard Jalen Steele has decided not to play his senior season and will instead focus on graduating in the spring.”

“@matthewcstevens: MSU coach Rick Ray: "“What Jalen has experienced with injuries has been extremely unfortunate. He’s battled through a lot of adversity...”

“@matthewcstevens: Ray (cont.) "and it’s important we do everything we can to support and help him earn his degree from Mississippi State.””

“@matthewcstevens: Steele suffered two torn ACLs & a broken wrist during his 3 years at MSU. In 78 games, drawing 33 starts, he averaged 8 points & 2 rebounds.”

“@matthewcstevens: Under NCAA rules: If Jalen Steele graduates from MSU this spring, he can transfer to any D-1 program and play immediately in 14-15 season.”

“@matthewcstevens: From MSU's Jalen Steele's MT @Jalensteele0: I'm not done playing. Just wanted to take a year off to get stronger for my senior year.”

“@matthewcstevens: RT @Jalensteele0: All I wanted was a redshirt and come back stronger next year but they got what they wanted.”

"@matthewcstevens: Steele's mom, Terrara Kimber, told me Steele's intention is to graduate in the spring and transfer to a D-1 program to play immediately.”

"@matthewcstevens: Steele's mom told me her son asked Rick Ray for a redshirt year b/c of knee. Said Ray denied request and encouraged him to play this season.”

That's honestly too bad. Rick Ray says he's trying to do the best for Jalen, but from what I'm reading that's not at all what Jalen wants. I'm sure Jalen has some orange in him growing up in Knoxville.

MSU will not have the scholarships in 2014-15 for Steele to stay. To many underclassmen and committed players.
Tough choice by Rick Ray.

But Steele's high school coach is looking like a jackass on twitter if he really knew more of the situation. He would shut up.

Just talking to the player and listening to him is not always the smartest choice.

Jalen Steele is alot better than some of the guys Ray has recruited.

What more of the situation is there than what's out there?

He will be eligible for the 2014-2015 year. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

I'm not sure what the deal is with him and Rick Ray. I consider Ray to be one of the most classy and ethical coaches in all of sports. That said, it really says something with Jody Wright is blasting your program. Steele isn't a star, but can be a contributor for an SEC team, especially a team like Mississippi State that has zero talent. Jalen was also one of the few that chose to stay around for the post Stansbury era.

Sucks for Steele, but the choice to redshirt isn't necessarily his to make. He's cleared to play, and his coach says he needs him this season (He does! MSU is in the midst of a giant rebuilding period).

If Steele wants to play next season, he'd better transfer ASAP, so he can start attending classes at his new school. He doesn't want to mess around and then have to hope for an NCAA waiver.

While I feel for Steele wanting to go out on a high note, I didn't mind the swiperboy situation which was a little similar.

There were a few differences though. Steele is better than Swiperboy. Steele's redshirt would have been due to injury. Swiperboy's shirt was due to lack of playing in 10-11. Swiperboy never got suspended, Steele did.

This is pretty much how I feel.

You'd think he'd want to go ahead and transfer now, he's gonna sit out the year regardless so why not do it at your new school. This way you could still be around the program you'll be playing with next year and getting acclimated.

Unless he's just wanting to really see who is desperate for a one year guard, he may end up a hot commodity.

If he transfers now, then he won't need an NCAA waiver to play next season.

If he either drops out of classes or stays at MSU, even though he's not playing bball this season, he'll still need an NCAA waiver to play next year.

Barton needed a waiver?

Barton graduated and had no break in his enrollment. He also didn't have the redshirt issue.

Steele is planning on graduating.

@Fultonhoops: @wvltsports Steele will redshirt this year, graduate in May transfer for sr year to another school. Was given choice play hurt or leave

Yep, but I'm confused on what he is doing this season. Staying at MSU? He can't redshirt if his coach doesn't allow it, and if he doesn't participate he gets kicked off the team and his scholarship gets revoked.

EDIT: Ah, strange. I guess they're allowing him to redshirt afterall. Then all he needs to do is graduate on time, and no waiver needed.

They are leaving him on scholarship this year. He's staying at MSU, graduating in May it sounds like.

MSU/Ray want the scholarship for next year. This year isn't a factor. He's already on scholarship this semester. What are they gonna do? Revoke it in May when he's about to graduate and hurt their APR?
