Jalen Hurd RB history discussion

I disagree that Hurd was a great running back. He had so many opportunities playing ahead of Kamala amd others and the defenses always had to account for dobbs as a runner. Hurd always ran straight ahead and never had the ability to make the first guy miss.
He was a stud athlete though. Had he played tight end he could’ve end up being a truly special player.

You should compare his number of carries to the guys ahead of him on the all-time list. Had he reached the record it would have been a case of quantity over quality.

Right. You are either delusional, on mind-altering drugs, or from Alabama, in which case the last would mean all three. Wait…

Isn’t “bama writer” an oxymoron? No offense intended. You and your IQ are welcome here, friend. You fit right in. Please give your Mama my best. And your sister.

If you aren't going to address my post, why bother quoting it?

My assumption is that doing so would be really damaging to your Hurd romanticism, so it's easier to start name calling like a middle school dropout.

If you are referring to Hurd... he was a very good RB. That's 100% on Jones. As truly screwed up as Jones and his system were... Hurd is 7th on UT's all time rushing list.

He could have easily been Tennessee's all-time leading rusher while only being the 2nd or 3rd best RB on the team (not counting Dobbs either).

You're absolutely right but but .... Just for perspective sake: butch only used him on 1st & 2nd downs, almost always running between the tackles. Teams knew where he'd be and he still got positive yardage.

Taunting the UGa player a few yards from the goal line, getting popped and fumbling will always stick in my head. Jones was right to chew him out and bench him that game. He could have grown and learned from that but he didn't. That was the beginning of the end of his career at UT.
Don’t forget his trailer park mom being arrested at a game

Except that he didn't really gain positive yardage to any significant degree. He lead the league in % of runs going for negative or no yardage. Over 53% of his career runs went for 3 yards or less. His last year he had the lowest YPC, and he was behind second-to-last by half a yard. He was bottom 10 in the entire nation, somewhere in the 180s.

Being here in the City, I was hoping to see Hurd suit up for the 49ers but so far it just hasn't worked out.

I know because everybody knew what the play was going to be on 1st & 2nd. 75% of the time it was the same play.

Also like I said, he was the 3rd or 4th best RB on the team (4th if you include QB Dobbs).

I almost feel like his job was to beat up the LBs so that we could gash the team in the 3/4th quarters.

Agreed. I hate butch but what coach wouldn't chew a player out for that. After that Hurd seemed to check out from the season.

He was the best Running Back on the team. You should be ashamed

I know he was all everything in high school but, from what I saw from here at Tennessee, he ran like a wounded ostrich. Dude was not fast and was most definitely not fluid. High School phenom? Most definitely, yes. Great college back? Not even at Bama with their structure and we all know their O'lines can make pedestrian backs Heismans.

BS. Hurd was the best every down running back. Watch his sophomore season. He was top shelf at end of season against a Big Ten team with a supposedly good defense, ranked 12 as to our 23rd slot.

Got tough short yards too. Remember the mis-direction run for six against Alabama? With about 2 min in the game? The no-call holding cost us the gane, along with a circus catch by their WR on 4th and 11

Forget Butch Jones for a moment. That 2015 squad was loaded along with the 2016 squad
Reread his post.

Does anyone else remember the scene from ESPN signing day coverage when Hurd announced and signed with the VOLS.
A USC staff member commented Hurd was "soft and weak"? It was a candid moment and not intended for the cameras, then the USC staff apologized for the comment. It was attributed to Tee Martin, I think.
USC apologizes for calling Vols signee Jalen Hurd 'soft and terrible'

Hurd did the best he could with that O-Line and offensive scheme. Should he have stuck it out? No.

I am not a butt kisser to transfers, but Hurd is the perfect case of why players should have the option to transfer. Butch was getting the boy brained on every play. Hurd took that route for his own health and well-being. He was an exceptional receiver. Too bad Jones would not adapt.

I don't feel he quit the VOLS as much as Butch forced him to move on when the kid wanted to stay, but needed some relief from the well known damage backfield blockers and RBs in general.

The kid was a die hard VOL all the way. I agree OP, this was all on Jones and his mentality that his offense was so great, anyone could succeed. Watching Hurd and seeing what offense he came out of in H.S., Jones offense wasn't for him as far as a running back. He was an I-back and honestly, him coming here did a disservice to himself.

I don't know who all he had offers from but I do know he was good enough to receive one from Bama but his loyalty to Tennessee prevailed. I've wondered how he would have done there, in that system and with those coaches. At that time, I think Saban was still running the Pro I offense and Hurd may have fared better. However, when CLK arrived and modernized it, I don't know if Hurd would have been any better.

Glad he did make it to the league and show the hater wrong. Hope his health holds out.

Hurd was lied to repeatedly, he was a good RB for us and was a good WR at Baylor, got him drafted and in the NFL, Butch should've moved him to receiver and let Kamara handle the RB spot

At the very least bj should have kept them happy. Going to be difficult to be successful coach without keeping the right guys happy and motivated.

Bj not adapting is where he really excelled.

Speaking of Dobbs, I'm so ready to have another game‐changer at QB again. I will never forget the Dobbs to Jennings stunner in Athens. The walk out of Sanford stadium after the game was the weirdest feeling I've ever felt. I don't think I heard one single person say a word for 45 minutes. I will never let my Brother-in-law forget that game🤣

I agree, I hope we can find a playmaker at QB.

The come from behind win at USCe was a great performance but it gets overshadowed, for good reason, buy the Ga. win.

Yes that game against the Gamecocks was epic! Honestly that was probably one of the greatest comebacks I have ever witnessed and been on the right side of.
