Jahvid Best

In all honesty I believe we had that kind of back in Coker. Unfortunately, his goods came as much in the way of a plastic baggie and lack of work ethic as they did in potential. Had he had his head in the right place, and not depended on just showing up to be enough, he would have written a seriously different story for himself at UT.

Coker was the best homerun threat we had at RB at the time.

But he was not, and is not Jahvid Best fast.

Not meant to imply Jahvid Best or Devine fast, but fast, and not afraid to go where the knocks are, and the speed to bounce outside if needed. Just that type of back. Foster looks to bounce first to avoid the hit, and lacked the speed to turn the corner much. The title is running back, not dancing ball carrier.

Actually not even close. Best has run in the 10.3's. Coker's state title time was a 10.85.

To really put that kind of speed in perspective according to the TSSAA website the fastest 100m run in state title race in TN since the turn of the century is a 10.60 by Chris Pearson in '03.

To put in perspective how nasty fast that is, when i was in highschool Willie Gault set the GA state 100 yard record at 9.9. Four years later, again from our high school we sported our second fastest man in GA in Ronnie Dennis who broke Willie's record by posting a 9.8 100 yard. (Back in the day before we converted to 100m). Mathematically, those would convert to an approximate 10.7, 100m. In those days Willie was considered world class speed with those times. No doubt he improved those track times while at UT. But, the times they are posting now is freakish.

My first car wasn't that fast...

To be honest those times sound slow for the likes of Gault. TSSAA has times as low as 9.4 for the 100yd (Preston Brown, '76) and a slew of sub 10 times.

By the way Gault not too long ago set the world record for his age class by cranking out a 10.79 100m at age 45.

in addition to winning the california state 100m, he also came in second in the 200m. best had olympic level speed. if he didn't get injured last year he surely would have been a star on our track team.

Actually, "world class" and "olympic level" has a whole new meaning these days. If you aren't going under 10.1 you're not even in the conversation. It's hard to believe but did you know that the last 100m gold that wasn't under 10.00 was all the way back in 1980? In fact, in this last Oympics the BRONZE was a 9.91. (!)

That's a whole .45 faster than the fastest time I'm aware Best has run officially. (10.36) It's just crazy. (and I still can hardly talk about Bolt's 9.69)

In the 07 Cal game, If I recall correctly I think Best torched UT the few times he touched the ball. But I had not heard much from him since that game.
I must admit i am not exactly glued to pac 10 football either.

Yeah he was actually more productive than Forsett per touch in that game.

I think that Jeff Demps has ran a 10.1 if I am not mistaken. That would make him a hair faster than Best.

Actually Demps has a 10.01 to his credit. Holliday at LSU has a 10.02 so they're pretty much neck and neck though Demps is younger.

Best is VERY fast by football standards but the two above are well out of Best's league.

Game vs. Miami was the first chance I had to see Best. It is hard to say from one game but I was more impressed with him than any back I have seen this year including Moreno, Wells, and Ringer. They guy looked like Desean Jackson running that punt back agaist us on the one cut he made for a long tochdown run. He looks like a future Pro bowler. Of course I only seen him play once.

If you watched that game against Cal you would have remembered Best. He made some tremendous runs against us.

I watched it. I just don't remember him. I remember Longshore playing the game of his life and Jackson running that kick back and it seems like a turnover for a touchdown. Wasn't one I wanted to remember alot of. But Best is for sure the real deal.

He had a run up the right sideline that was very good. He looked like the fastest guy on the field to me.
