I think that would be a good little experiment to try in the Buffalo game, kicking Austin Johnson out and moving AJ to the MLB spot. Also, I would put Corey Miller at end in his place as he has played pretty well so far.

I don't think it would hurt, we may even discover we like it better who knows. I think it'd be interesting to see a front 7 of:

DE-Miller
DT-Jackson
DT- Couch
DE-Walls

OLB-Maggitt
MLB- Johnson
OLB- Smith

or:

DE- Miller
DT- Couch
DE- Jackson

OLB- Maggitt
MLB- A.J. Johnson
MLB- Austin Johnson
OLB- Smith

What do you guys think? I just feel that our LB looked pretty slow running to the ball/reacting to plays Saturday and maybe this could be something we would try.

I'm just extremely disappointed in our pass rush. It's not very good.

That's another good point I didn't mention. I think Jacques/Curt could absolutely wreak havok coming off the edge in a 3-4 scheme to help beef up our pass rush. Brantley had ALL day to throw Saturday I'm pretty sure I could have made all those throws with as much time as he had.

I think this is exactly how the starter linebackers would look if we ran a 3-4. Only problem is that we don't really have a D-line built for a 3-4... yet

Jacques Smith 40-4.62
Chris Rainey 40-4.24
Jeff Demps-4.26

Probably would not have caugth them at Linebacker either. :)

Austin made some plays and actually tackled those runts. It was like Rocky chasing the chickens in the alley.

They're already experimenting with that sort of thing. Go back and look at the first three games and you'll see Maggit and Smith going all over the place.

And just give up on the 4-3/3-4 thing. Every team in football plays both. Until offenses stop lining up with 5 wide receivers one play then three TEs then next, expect defenses to do the same thing.

I hope Wilcox and Dooley are reading this board, this is pure gold.

when you only have to throw 2 yard passes your not goin get a good pass rush. Its not like he set back in the pocket and picked us apart.

They worked Austin Johnson silly on one drive. Four straight plays they went to Demps. He was ****ing gassed by the 3rd play! He finally got a pass interference down in the redzone. Love how he battled though.

I agree, it would have been great to get more pressure. But, beyond using our front 4 to rush, who would you send from the LB's to get pressure? With Rainey and Demps coming out of the backfield, you have to respect their ability to get in space (where your blitzing linebacker would have been) and catch a quick hitter. With those two guys, it is really a catch 22. You can sell out to get pressure in hopes that Brantley can't get the ball off, or you can sell out to stop Rainey and Demps. There is literally no in between when facing that team.

Linebackers should be in position to make the play. If they are, then Rainey, Demps or even Chris Johnson ain't going anywhere. They have to have somewhere to begin running before they can begin to run fast. Set up the wall from c gap to c gap. Close in and then make the play. And we need to tackle instead of merely hit. We can get WAY better as a defense when we actually learn where and how to play TEAM defense. Like we did against Jones and McFooten. Remember that game youngsters?

This would actually be happening if we had a full roster of players we want and need, Meaning enough DT's and DE's. J. Smith is just the size LB this staff wants.

Take our one starting lb with experience out of the line-up? Excellent idea! Why didn't coaches Wilcox, Sirmon, and Thompson think of that...?

Oh that is right, they actually have experience coaching! Good lord, uf beat us, but this defense shows promise.

Also, why bench Hood? He almost had rainey in the backfield. He almost caught him from behind and he is a 300 lb dt!

Stick to cheering. Let our coaching staff coach.

If we go to a 3-4 primarily, then Jaq Smith would be the ideal stand-up pass rusher, a-la [an early career] Willie McGinist (sp?), Terrell Suggs, et al.

I'm not trying to say I expect him to produce like those two (although it'd be nice), but his skill set seems to be in line with those two.

How is any experiment involving Buffalo gonna tell us anything that the Montana or Cincinnati games didn't?

Why would you take the best DL off the DL? What sense does that make? And then put him in a position he has never played? You think the Freshmen got burned, how bad do you think he would look...

We knew coming in the LB group would be bad, two starting True Freshmen for proof. We need Lathers back and it will help but until then we have Frankenstein out there in his position.

As far as our pass rush, its been horrible since Monte left. Wilcox is not very multiple like people expected him to be. I remember watching his Boise defenses and he blitzed from everywhere. To go with that our DL coaching has been horrendous since the Cajun left.

I know people wont like it but I think its time to get a real DL coach in here who can coach these kids. Lance Thompson has shown me nothing to this point and he has vanished on the recruiting front as well.

He did, it was a nice play. Do you remember the play right after it though?

Yes. Austin covered the TE like he was supposed to and AJ did not cover the RB out of the backfield that scored. They were in assigned man coverage.

You can keep your fan card but put your coaching card away...

Why dont you call up Dooley and tell him you want to Apply to be the DC? Then you would be able to make these changes.
