Kelly's coaching tree is not as impressive as I had guessed it would be.
Clark Lea and Butch Jones are his most successful former assistants.
I hope Lampley becomes the best assistant he ever had.
Butch Jones never worked for him, I don’t believe. Could be wrong on that, but I think he just happened to be hired to replace him a couple times. Marcus Freeman coached for him for a year.

He was on the staff at both Central Michigan and Cincinnati under Kelly. He became head Coach at both place on his departure, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Apparently Butch spent the first year on staff with Kelly when Kelly got the CMU job, then went to West Va until Kelly went to Cincinnati, at which point Butch got the CMU HC job. Stayed ant CMU until Kelly went to ND, then replaced Kelly at Cincinnati. So they worked together for a year but Butch replaced him at two straight stops.

I read this morning Butch was his offensive coordinator at Central Michigan. What I read this morning was wrong.
Butch was OC at CMU under DeBord, then DeBord got fired and Kelly was hired. Butch then took a demotion to RB coach for a year under Kelly before going to West Virginia. So they did work together for a year, but Butch was just a position coach.
