I’m really just excited about the attitude all our guys are playing with. The young guys seem eager to perform and earn the respect of their teammates. I think we had good kids like that over the last decade, but there were no studs in front of them to impress, so there was no edge on either side of the sword (upperclassmen or underclassmen). When we were dominant, if an underclassmen played and contributed meaningfully, he had earned the right to do so. Little more than 5 years ago talented underclassmen starting was a foregone conclusion/necessity. Which is why a kid like JG has so much film. He’s a perfect example of a kid that needed to watch for at least 2 seasons. We’d be much happier with him if we hadn’t watched him struggle playing alongside other ill-prepared guys. I think Hyatt and Small are a good bellwether for where we’ve gotten to. Both talented but won’t dictate our success/failure. They can develop and contribute then dominate when it’s their turn. This is the difference between a program and a roster. The last couple guys were looking to fill out a roster (even Kiffen did this to a degree). CJP has a program. I like it.
