J Jennings Dismissed from UT

And hopefully the next coach will just say "NO" to any recruit who has had issues prior to coming to UT no matter how many ***** they have by their name. Not sure they are worth it in the long run.

This is BS, a kid in school or a guy like me sitting behind the computer. This guy spoke his mind, therefore he should have the freedom of speech. he told the truth and has awesome talent. I Think this was a BS call.

"Freedom of speech" is a common phrase used to invoke the protections of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. It was intended to protect the average citizen from being censored or persecuted for speaking out, presumably against the government. Remember, the drafters of the Constitution were British subjects who had a belly full of being a British colony, and subject to British rule, which included the ability to jail dissidents, e.g. - those who spoke out in public against British rule.

There's been a boatload of 1A case law since then, and the needle has moved back and forth, but the basic premise remains: that the First Amendment protects you from repercussions by the government, not from any natural consequences for your actions / speech. Depending on the balance of the Supreme Court any time a 1A case makes to the bench, we get different, but similar interpretations of exactly how far the protections of the 1A extend.

This is not, in any way, shape, or form, a First Amendment issue. But it is free speech, and it did have it's consequences. End of story.

He's gone, he's not coming back, and that's that.

Go Vols.

Please explain ????

Think the statement was meant to be self explanatory. After being in the program for as long as JJ was, he should've known what is the appropriate behavior in this situation. He should also have been taught the concept of what it means to be a "team player" and not abandoning his brothers when his luck is down. I think once these young men get to college, all of the coaches have a responsibility to develop their players character and somewhere along the way that got lost. I'm saying 1)he should've known better or 2)he had already got away with acting this way in the past and thought nothing would be done about it.

Behavior is a reflection of leadership, just sayin.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with parenting and nothing to do with being treated as superstar in high school. Instead let's blame the UT staff since they are on their way out the door anyway.

It is rather telling that too many of our fanbase want to lay the blame for JJ's immaturity on the staff. He had an attitude problem long before he arrived in Knoxville. The only thing I will blame Butch for in this situation is for not kicking him off the team sooner. And kudos to Hoke for doing just that.

Jimmy’s blog: Tennessee makes right call to dismiss Jennings | WNML-AF

Jimmy makes a lot of statements in that blog. If even half of them are true this is long over due and Butch carried him too long anyway.

This coaching staff is a joke if they’re sharing that much info with the media. The bit about his class attendance is a FERPA violation in and of itself.

If these things are true, the kid probably deserved to be booted. But this should have NEVER been broadcast to the public. If I were a player in the team currently, it would make me trust no one within the football staff or administration.

Edit: One more note. Jimmy Hyams is further proving he is not a journalist. The number of opinions thrown into what should be a news story continues to prove he is a hack radio host only and should not be taken serious. A journalist reports the facts and lets users form opinions.

Freedom of speech can have repercussions ..... just send your boss an email telling him he can kiss your big fat *** and that his wife should shave her hairy ape face..... see his that works out

Its his blog, generally reserved for sharing his opinion

So, you expect the coaches to take the hatred and nastiness for removing a player and have people whine and complain about it being nothing, but when they explain that it isn't nothing, you give more nastiness because they shouldn't have done it. Talk about a lose-lose situation.

Maybe this is proof that the coaches/administration know more than the fans do, and should trust them.

Yes, that’s part of having the job. You take the heat from the fans. You don’t go and violate federal privacy laws and the trust of the players to cover your arse.

If these things are true, they should have handled accountability issues behind closed doors and stopped these players from acting like fools long before it reached this point.

As for it being Hyams blog, he’s using it to break news. He likes to act like a journalist, but he’s no different than Clay Travis. Just less of a sense of humor and less of a dick.

No. Its proof that hoke is was and always will be a follower. Pathetic

Maybe fans should just grow up now and then. And it's not like they gave his grades, they simply said he's not been going to class. That's not breaking privacy.

And part of the job of the players are to not be a bad reflection of the program, and Jennings failed that miserably.

You are incorrect. It is not legal to be sharing any of his academic information with the media or anyone else who does not have a relevant academic interest. That includes class attendance. I would know because this is wheelhouse.

You are correct if this is true. But it falls on the coaching staff ultimately. They recruited him. It is their job once he gets to campus to mold him and hold him accountable. For things to have gotten to this point is on the coaching staff.

Couldnt you get that knowledge by asking students or other players?

By that broad strokes, it's also illegal to give as many injury/illness updates as they do because of HIPAA.

They tried to mold him, didn't work, so they removed him. No different from anywhere else. You and so may others have such a blind hatred for the coaches that you can't see who is really at fault.

I don’t know what you’re trying to prove. Yes, you are correct and this is why most schools are pretty secretive with injuries and most info that leaks out does not come from the school itself.

Because this board is proof in itself that fans are so damn rabid that they really don't care about the privacy of the players until **** like this season happens. It's not really the privacy, it's your hatred for the coaches.

Hyams said in his article that he was getting info from the coaches. Journalists aren’t connected to players like that either as the sports information department makes it clear that type of communication should not be happening. Teammates do not like snitches either.
