Sadly two ex - Vols are outperforming our entire team so far this season. Williams has 511 yards receiving and has caught 4 touchdown passes and Hurd has 415 yards receiving and has caught 3 td passes. Our entire team has fewer yards passing than these two combined and only has 5 touchdown receptions. I hate that these two are not helping us -- and recognize that there are reasons why they are not here - but I applaud them for their successes and would not be surprised to see both of them playing on Sunday. Here is hoping for continued success for both these guys.

Botch was too dumb to make sure a player like Williams got enough touches. He did the same with AK. His roster mismanagement cost us several players that would make us a lot better. We could really use Boulware too.
Bouleware left after Pruitt was hired. I said that would be his most important recruiting job and I don’t think Pruitt even contacted. I think VZ moved into starting role recently.

I never believed they were the villainous, malcontents that the majority of the fan base assigned them as.

They were the smartest ones in retrospect.
I didn't defend Williams much. He was a very talented... flake. UT should have took a cue from most everyone else and left him alone. But Jones ego made him think he could fix him.

I was taken to task for suggesting that Jones' mismanagement of Hurd and not Hurd himself was the main problem. Now... most have flipped and recognize Jones' mismanagement of players was a major issue. Some still though accuse Hurd of "quitting" when it appears he didn't feel he had a real choice.

For my part... I think the Vols would be a much better team right now with Hurd at dotting the I and running downhill.

This reminds me of something I will wake up at night thinking about. I have to remind myself there's nothing I can do about and try to think of something constructive. Now I read this and it's like an awakened nightmare. Thanks.

With you until the last sentence. Hurd is doing now what he should’ve been doing since the moment he stepped on a collegiate football field, which is catch passes while playing WR. He’s a very good athlete for his size with excellent hands and pass catching abilities. OTOH, only an average collegiate running back at best. Imho, he’s be averaging about 4-4.5 yards per carry behind this bad OL, like he pretty much did behind the bad OLs he played behind.

He transferred after he graduated which is after Pruitt was hired, but Bouleware left the team at the bye week so after game 5. He had already made his mind up, left his teammates in the middle of the season so he was leaving regardless if contact was made or not.

If you'll remember though... his whole problem with Jones started after the bowl game in which they lined him up in the I and had a lot of success. I believe it was reported that Jones had committed to running more I or ace formations that would feature what Hurd did best. Instead, Jones went even more to the spread and featured Dobbs. Right decision or wrong decision... he wasn't straight with Hurd who had other options at that point.

I think in a good I offense he would have been a very good back. In any form of spread then he's probably doing what he should do.

He got 6 carries out of the I formation that day vs NWestern...looked pretty good, nothing great. I remember one carry out of the I for Hurd that day....got the carry, huge hole, looked like it was gonna be a huge play.....got through the line of scrimmage, was one on one with a linebacker about 6 yards past the LOS....wound up gaining 6 yards after the linebacker dropped him like a bag of dirt.

All the other stuff I agree with. Jones mismanaged him. I was never one of the guys dogging Hurd and calling him a quitter and whatnot. I’ve onky ever argued about his talent level and abilities as a running back, which I believe were only a fraction of what we were told they were. He was good, he was solid, he was average. He carried the ball the second most times of any running back in school history and is 8th or 9th in rushing yardage all-time, and doesn’t deserve mentioning among our top 10 rbs all-time imo.

Not counting a pathetic Arkansas team. How many quality defenses have these teams played? Let's see:

Baylor 3-2: Abilene Christian, UTSA, Duke, Kansas, Oklahoma...Yeah you can guess which two teams Hurd and Baylor didn't beat.
Colorado State 1-4: Hawaii, Colorado, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois State...Somehow Arkansas lost this one when they abandoned the run game with a 17 point lead.

McBride and our most beat up receivers could have put up those numbers against Hawaii and Abilene Christian.

Also these players choose to leave the team and to some extent I don't blame them with butch dorking things up. I think Preston was just afraid he wouldn't be the No. 1 WR and couldn't handle that.
