J Crompton's HS Coach's Input

Sometimes gifted players just don't work out. QB is a position that the HC has to have to utmost confidence in. Crompton may have it, but I haven't seen it.

we are still looking at his development, or the other two QB's. I thought this coach had a point...so VN...what do you think?

I've said before what I think. He should never throw another pass for UT. He has had three years, two of them not under Dave Clawson, to show something and he's always been bad-to-mediocre.

Even if he were our best option in 2009 (God forbid), he shouldn't play. It's futile, because by the time we're ready to contend in the SEC, he won't be there. We'd start 2010 trying to break in a new QB, get to the Florida game with high hopes now that Tebow is gone, only we'll lose because we're in the same boat they're going to be in. And the season's wasted, because we played Crompton in 2009 so we could have a glorious Music City Bowl championship season.

Pick one of the young quarterbacks, commit to him and develop him. If we're going to make decisions for the short-term, we should have just kept Fulmer. I'm sure he would have gotten us back to Music City Bowl caliber next year and for years to come.

I was in Wal-Mart the other week & I ran into Jon Crompton's High School Football coach. We ran through some chit-chat, but then went straight to Dave Clawson/Fulmer & the 08 offense. He said he gets all the UT updates from Jon himself & one of the big things with him is that Jon's strength's were not used to his potential, such as him running more. He then went on to say that Clawson had Jon stay somewhat immobile in the pocket & Cropmton had trouble doing what Clawson asked. The coach seamed to think it was the offense & the schemes.

Cromp was the #2 Pro QB behind Ryan P. from LSU; he was a 5 star hs prospect & a solid comit for UT from day 1. When Crompton filled in for Erik A. in the 06 season he was ok. He nearly beat LSU (Sugar bowl winners; J Russtle was in his final year) he chucked some bombs but struggled to get the first downs needed to win. He also lost to AK when D-Mac was on fire. None the less, for a back up, he showed a lot of promise. Many of VN was in support of Crompton being the starter from spring practice to UCLA, but then it faded.

Don't get me wrong, J. Crompton looked bad when he played & I had my share of yelling at him in my living room. I still remember Dave Clawson's expressions when Crompton would mess up at the worst times. In all reality, we still don't have a stud QB coming in for next year that can carry us, so we are still looking at his development, or the other two QB's. I thought this coach had a point...so VN...what do you think?
