IU Coaching Position....

you hit the nail on the head for me. It also really bothers that as of right now he only has one national championship and that was from someone else's team. I can't see Knight, K, Wooden or Pitino not picking up any championships with some of the teams Williams fielded at Kansas.
The '97 and '03 KU failures are particularly bad.

Roy added Marvin Williams to that team. They wouldn't have won without him.

2.) Agreed ... So this being said, what do you think a fair salary for Pearl's services should be? At what point do you think Hamilton should let him walk to a higher-paying job?
Find out what Rick Barnes and Bill Self are making, then pay Pearl about $200K less than the average of those two. If anyone wants to offer him more than that, Hamilton should tell him he's free to go.

the '97 failure in my opinion is inexplicable.

that's true, but it was still largely doherty's team.
No, Doherty's team played as individuals and missed the NCAAs. That's like saying Pearl won with Peterson's team his first season.

agree to disagree. Doherty's team was on the cusp of greatness when Doherty left. The players just didn't like him.

This photo is obviously lifted from the campus-wide celebration of Purim.

Surely the administration is a proponent of freedom of religion.
Most definitely. He probably had just finished listening to the Book of Esther being read aloud, and had to quench his thirst.

However, he could have worked a little harder on his costume... :p

Tennessee wasn't even the worst program in the SEC when Bruce took over. I love how people feel the need to overdramatize the state of Tennessee's basketball woes to put Bruce on a pedestal with coaches he has no business being mentioned in the same breath with.

even coach pearl is aware that he doesn't belong on that pedestal yet.

Here are my top 3 reasons for giving Pearl a large raise:

1. Wade Houston
2. Jerry Green
3. Buzz Peterson

There are a lot of reports of reciprocal interest between IU and Pearl. Pearl is obviously going to talk to IU, if nothing else than to help increase the amount UT will pay him.

As for IU being cheap historically, that is correct. But Sampson was going to make close to $2MM this year and IU donors are reportedly stepping up (witness the anonymous $500K that was given by an booster to pay off Sampson).

We'll see what happens. If it comes purely to dollars, IU cannot compete with UT. But if IU is in the ballpark, it could get interesting.

They won't offer him something like that.

They'll do what we did and dip into the ranks of the mid-majors. That way the coach gets a nice pay bump and they are still on the low-end pay scale for BCS teams.

Bruce is likely to get a raise to around 3 mil after this season, anyway.
Absurd, Bruce will probably get a raise to 1.6-1.7m from 1.1....Pitino makes 2.45m Gillespie 2.3m, Rick Barnes, Texas & Tubby Smith, Minnesota at 1.8m, Thad Matta, OSU 1.75m, Tom Izzo, MSU 1.74 per USAToday's Steve Wieberg. I doubt he's going to make more than these guys. He could be offered a one time bonus as many schools do at the back end of contracts now. Tom Izzo gets 4m bonus for staying through 2010, for example.

Yes it is true, IU donors are said to be stepping up for the next coaching hire. They are tired of the talk that IU does not pay its coaches very well. Sampson did make great money compared to alot of D1 coaches right now. They will drop the bucks in a good solid proven coach.

Pearl is #1 on the list(this I know for a fact as it comes straight from one of the members on the hiring committee) and they expect to speak to him following the Vols season. I see him sitting down and hearing what they have to say, but not leaving K'ville. The one member that I speak with said he thinks it will be awfully tough to pull Pearl away from UT, but thinks it is possible because of his midwest connections.

Pearl is of major interest to Indiana and I expect there will be a conversation or two. I am betting on Sean Miller out of Xavier, maybe that is just wishful thinking on my part.

Having closely watched Indiana all of my life I would not want to predict, except to say that since Myles Brand walked on that campus it has been screwed in it's hires, minus Coach Hoepner, who unfortunately died.

The announcement of a committee last week is just a further example of how far IU has fallen in the last 10 years...can you imagine a young talented coach wanting to come into such an environment? Plus what will be the other sanctions coming from the M. Brand led NCAA?
When Sampson was hired he was like 5th or 6th choice, the others, i.e. Few, Crean, etc. turned IU down.

I am crossing my fingers on Miller taking on this challenge, much like Pearl did at UT.

Miller would be a good hire for IU, IMO.

I agree with much of what you wrote, but Crean did not turn down IU. Few allegedly did, but Sampson was next in line for whatever reason.

No doubt Pearl will at least talk to IU. I would be fine with Miller.

John Brice at VQ has an interview up that he did with ADMH. Hamilton said IU has no asked for permission to talk to Bruce, but it doesn't mean they won't after the season.

He did say, and it was the line in the story, that whomever does call better have their checkbook ready, because he's going to do what it takes to keep Bruce.
