Pennington's site is apparently not doing well (the discussion board gets about two posts a week). His writing has been nauseating for a while (could he have been any bigger of an a-hole on hostessgate?) but he has hit a new low. I'm not giving him the satisfaction of providing a link.

Pennington has resulted to putting the most hysterical and negative spin - and outright lies - in order to create some buzz on his site. This bum is no friend of UT and those involved with the program need to cut him and his loser crew off cold.

He writes:

It’s not been a real good month in Knoxville. First, Lane Kiffin shocked Planet Vol by packing his bags for USC.

Then Tennessee went through a head coaching search that looked pretty bad in the national press. Various reports had the Vols being turned down by Jon Gruden, Lovie Smith, Will Muschamp, Troy Calhoun, David Cutcliffe and Kyle Whittingham. At that point, AD Mike Hamilton hired Derek Dooley from Louisiana Tech despite a 17-20 overall resume and a 4-8 record last year.

Now history seems to be repeating itself as Tennessee searches to find a defensive coordinator. Clemson DC Kevin Steele backed out of a deal with his alma mater to stay in South Carolina for less money. Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach Joe Barry accepted the linebackers coaching job at Southern Cal rather than the Vols’ coordinator job. South Carolina sources say that Gamecock assistant Ellis Johnson also turned down a high-six-figure offer from the Vols. Additionally, Alabama’s Kirby Smart is believed to have turned down overtures from Dooley, too.

Bob Sanders — who had been mentioned in connection with the job — has been retained by new Buffalo coach Chan Gailey and will once again coach the Bills’ defensive line next season.

And yesterday, North Carolina’s Everett Withers announced that despite preliminary conversations with UT, he will be staying in Chapel Hill.

Some other names on UT’s rumored board continue to be: Alabama linebackers coach Sal Sunseri, TCU defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas (a former Volunteer assistant under Johnny Majors), New Orleans Saints defensive line boach Travis Jones and current UT linebackers coach Lance Thompson.

Jones has also been mentioned in connection with the remaining open position on Georgia’s staff. Jones is a former Bulldog player.

Regardless, the big orange T on their helmets could just as easily stand for “tumult” as it does Tennessee right now.

This bs from a Knoxville guy. During a week when things are going well for UT, he's digging to complain. Enough is enough.

Pennington you should be ashamed. I pledge to never watch your amateurish show or visit your cobweb-covered website ever again.

I've heard that Steele is still in the mix, and it's just not going to be announced till after NSD.

Even if he's not the guy, I really doubt that story is not the case. We probably have most of our staff picked out, but class act that Dooley is, he's not going to make most people run to a new program right before NSD. Coach lamea$$ has no problem raiding our cupboard within a few days of NSD, but that's not CDD's style. Most of those 'potential' DC's that were mentioned in this story are probably signing where they're at because they know the position's been filled.

Why else would someone turn down a DC job to coach DL or LB? That's not a great career move, period.

Lot of truth to what he said, like it or not.

Agree.

Not everybody drinks and regurgitates the koolaid for the sheep who think UT and East TN is the world's #1 destination. Our shiit stinks just like everybody's else whether you want to believe it or not.

Why does everyone think that media guys in Knoxville should only say good things -- all the time -- about UT??? It's not their job to only take one side or be a "friend of UT"....if they did they would be referred to as fans, not journalists.

This^...it's good to hear another perspective sometimes...if it was all rah,rah,rah...it would be rather dull.

I have no problem with this Pennington story.

My problem in general is with the Knoxville media, as a whole. When reporters in Chattanooga, Nashville and Memphis are out-scooping the media establishment in Knoxville, that is a problem. Also, the Knoxville media establishment (KME) has taken sides with coaches and condescended to fans as to why we need to support them (the "who are you gonna get" crowd).

Heather Harrington has outscooped Hyams, Hooker and Griffith in the last 4 months than anybody wants to really give her credit for. Now that is saying something right there...

Uh are we talking about this guy. I dunno I'm drunk. Look. My good buddy in knoxville has a bar reg that just so happens to be john p. Dude is a joke. Doesn't tip. A complete joke. You can catch him at the Ruby Tuesday on emory rd (I think..) for all his excellent insight I'm sure. Really? Ruby Tuesday? Yes. My god. Is ambles still visiting? That's what I care about. The thread you started is good I won't take that away from you. I'm not going to bash you. It's all well and good. But. That thread? The ambles stuff is near the top. I'd get in it but I'm just gonna go to sleep.

Seems to me certain people can't handle the truth.

Oh, and the media isn't supposed to be fans anyway, so get that notion out of your heads.

I honestly have no clue what your problem is with this story. It's a story about the fact that nobody wants to coach at UT. Clearly you have the mindset of "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". Well, that's not their job. Sorry.

Agree not everyone does but most local reporting should be, I repeat should be fair and balanced. This is not.

Timing has resulted in some of our problems, let's see Southern Cal can't find an Offensive Coordinator, Ga can't find a defensive Coordinator---are their programs falling apart? No, and neither is ours.

He could have just as easily talked about the remarkable recruiting job that the new staff has done.
Fulmer's last recruiting staff had 4 four or five star recruits. CDD and crew, is currently sitting with 12.

I am not looking for a homer, but that kind of trash needs to be thrown out. I personally know --- not think or surmise that some of his insinuations are flat out wrong.
It isn't my job to report on UT sports either. If he is going to be a negative reporter, he at least needs to get his facts right and not just regurgitate something he read on ESPN.

Just my opinion, you are welcome to your own.

Is this the guy who writes for the metro pulse? If so, who cares? It's the metro pulse, chillax a bit, no one cares what some douchenozzle who writes for the metro pulse thinks. People only read the for "news of the weird" and to see some scantly clad ladies in the back where they advertise the mouse's ear.

Ummmm. You might as well be mad at the sky because it's blue. Pennington's article does nothing other than tell it exactly like it is. I'm with most others here....you need to chillax.

Well, to be fair to the OP, I think there was more to it than so and so turned down the job.

I think Cutcliffe was all over it, but Hamilton wanted to check out other options first. Being turned down by Jon Gruden, Lovie Smith, etc isn't that big of a deal....those are guys who you expect to turn down college jobs. Had they been hired, it would have been epic. Pennington does a fair amount of exaggerating the truth. So, don't bash on the OP too much.

My point just was that no one cares about a stupid regional, FREE newspaper.

The complaint is that pennington is spinning the story unfairly against UT....no one said they want all UT reporters to write only positive articles....just don't spin rumors as fact to make UT look bad. We have enough enemies outside of Tennessee. We don't need to pay them and let them live in our backyard.

Boom roasted

I have read a lot of things pennington and watched his show on Sunday's. It's just my opinion but I feel he has always been too critical of whatever he picks as his subject on matters that relate to UT. If there is anyone who can remember a topic that was not, post it, I would like to see it. I think he does it to get the ultimate response from UT fans for his own agenda and publicity.

John Pennington is a smug little man who thinks he can talk down to people. His last major gig was posing on the front of a Lucky Charms box. I don't need his witless stories to tell me that we are going through a tough period. His story can be technically accurate and Pennington can be a major DB, they aren't mutually exclusive.

His story is nothing but a rehash of previously reported negative things all grouped into one little column. Who cares? If he wants to write everything bad that has happened then let him. Don't read it. I wouldn't have if I didn't open this thread.

Witch Doctor say pretty sure it has been a bad month for John and every Vols sports writer. Witch Doctor say everyone played the game of "First" to then be exposed. Witch Doctor believe Pennington has been a little upset because it wasnt a "Fulmer" connection. Witch Doctor say its now fun to see them have to eat humble pie...maybe John was just sampling a slice as we all have had to.(?)
Bones never lie.
