It's time for Coker to go....

I just think that it is irresponsible to let any student athelete back onto a team after a failed drug test.
I understand that if they get let go some other college will pick them up, but like I said, I think that the NCAA should step in. It sends the message that drugs are ok, as long as you are REAAAALLLLYYYY good at what you do.

I wouldn't go that far. I am all for second and third chances, and I would rather view each case as an individual event without applying hard and fast rules to every situation. These guys are college students, and they have lapses in judgement...at least I did when I was in college.

That being said, at some point as a coach, you risk your integrity by handing out absolute last chances, only to back off from your statements. To this end, it hardly seems fair to the other players on the team that some players continuously get "off the hook".

As a coach it would seem that such behavior would be counterproductive to the team at the very least. Weed or no weed, most people thought it was a given that Mr. Coker was on his last chance.

Agreed.

I know kids have lapses in judgement, but I firmly believe that if you made rules like this then eventually they would either outsmart the drug tests or just stick to booze.

It seemed to me that James Banks tried to get kicked off the team. He and Schafer (sp?) were talented in the extreme, but never had anyone put a boot in their a$$. We don't and didn't need them.

He should have been gone the last time. Not only has Fulmer started making up rules as he goes, he's become hypocritical and obviously worried about booting Coker because of his big play ability. Which is obviously directly linked to his job security. Or lack thereof.

You never miss a curfew? never skip a class? never screw up more than 3 times in your life?

I never had a curfew in college because I was never handed a free education

And I can absolutely guarantee you that if I was told "One more time and you're out of here"....you wouldn't catch me jay-walking. I wouldn't miss a class. I wouldn't be within 10 feet of any type of altercation. I would be in my bed 30 minutes before curfew.

It's his blatant disregard that bothers me...

He's been handed all of this and he has no respect or appreciation for it...

He seems to feel entitled...not grateful

You would admit that it's your perception that he has a blatant disregard that bothers you?

I mean you don't actually know the reasons/facts behind the timeline he has with his coaches.

Very true

I don't know the details and I'll never be able to read his mind

But you have to admit...it certainly looks that way when your coach publicly says this is your last chance...and now you're suspended again

How it appears is a very real concern. How it actually is means more to me here. Fulmer accepted responsibility for this guy when his mother or father signed the scholarship papers. I'm going to trust Phillip to do right here. This is actually one of his better things he does. He's been wrong, but he's usually right.

As someone said earlier, the playmakers are cut more slack, which leads me to believe that Coker may be cut a little more slack that a walk on before being suspended, which means that he has already been cut quite a bit of slack, and then suspended, now for the 3rd time. Where do the perception and reality not line up? He has been suspended-fact. This is the third time-fact.

if it is drugs, he has to be gone. it wouldn't even be that big of a loss in my opinion. he hasn't been a factor this year. i believe he could be a great player, but we just can't get him in the right spot

Guys, this is not a big loss for UT if hardesty is healthy enough to play. Coker is not a runningback. Watch him run 10 plays in a row. With all of that speed, he still can't get to the corner. He has no vision and seems to run right into the tackler every time. foster is not as fast but makes quick cuts and reads the blocks well. Hardesty either reads the blocks well or runs through the guy to get the yards. Coker goes to the ground if you blow on him. If coker doesn't bust through and outrun the linebackers, he doesn't get a yard. In fact he loses yards. Finally, our best two backs will be on the field. Coker is a thug anyway. He has had plenty of chances.

if rationalization makes you feel better, I'm all for it. However, I think the guy's a heckuva football player in need of some touches.

I'm thinking maybe as a receiver or something else but there is no way he should touch the ball over Hardesty or Foster. I think we all became way too overconfident in the kid after he made those two long runs last year over the two powerhouses Vandy and Marshall. i don't think there is a coach besides Fulmer in the country that would play Coker over Foster or Hardesty.

Once you start splitting hairs, you're going to have to keep doing it. If his 3rd chance is the last time, then it's the last time, no matter what he does.

Are we going to have a list of what constitutes a "last time" infraction and what's merely a 1-game suspension?
