It's Quality of Wins that counts over Quantity

I remember 2012 being pointed to when Kiffin was here. Most adjusted that when Dooley had to start over.

IIRC, with Kiffin 2011 was supposed to be a competitive year with an SEC as the goal. 2012 was going to be the National Championship run.

When Dooley was first hired, many people looked towards our schedule and personnel in '12 and bookmarked it as the year to challenge for an SEC championship.

So yeah, expectations were adjusted slightly, but still had a championship of some kind as the end sight.

No. Before the beginning of 2011, many Vol fans were pointing to 2012 as the year to win the SEC. Now most of them have backed off that prediction, but that prediction was not at all uncommon a year ago.

Eight wins, eight wins, eight wins. That seems to be all you hear for DD to keep his job. Are you telling me that the difference in remaining as the HC at the University of Tennessee can be found in a couple victories over NCSt and MSU? Come on.

I understand the necessity to reach a certain win plateau, but he's gotta beat a team that matters to make it stick. Would you trade a home W over Florida to end that streak for losses in the two mentioned above?

Quality over quantity.

So hypothetically you would not complain if he beat say UF and UGA then ended up 6-6?

I think 8 wins saves his job. That doesn't mean that I will be thrilled with 8 wins. I think the team is better than that and the schedule sets up better than that.

The 4 OOC games should be wins. I know some will say "Yeah but NCSU...." but they do NOT have the talent UT has. UT should beat them and it really shouldn't be that close. UT should beat UK and Vandy. IMHO, they have a clear edge over Mizzou and MSU. That's 8 games.

The question is how many can they win out of the other 4. Bama looks like a long shot... about like most everyone else's shot. UGA, UF, and USCe are all winnable games in that order of likelihood. I believe UT is now more talented than USCe and in the same "range" as UGA and UF.

So that puts me squarely in the "If Dooley can coach the Vols should win 9+" camp.

If he wins only 8 then I think he keeps the job but needs a GREAT '13 to survive.

Improvement is what we (wrongly) thought for 2011. But there was a lot of chatter for a 2012 championship run. Maybe it was a bunch of us redneck Dool-Aid drinkers on the recruiting board (I was one of them at the time) but it was discussed a lot.

Did you "think" that Hunter would be lost for 10 games? Did you "think" that Bray would be lost for 5 and not fully healed for the last couple? Did you "think" that Jackson and Brewer would be rock solid at safety with Waggner locking down one CB spot while the other was developed?

I know it is harder but putting things in context matters...

Dooley now has a roster that he should be able to win with. He should be able to suffer a "typical" number of injuries and win with it. If he can coach... then he should win. If he can't... then this team will reveal that.

With this team and the situation we find ourselves in at this moment in time I think quantity of wins is very important.

This is just my opinion, but contrast that to 2003 when UT finished the season 10-2. That was a rather bland 10-2. Yes, UT beat an 8-5 UF team at UF and won at Miami but that wasn't that great of a Miami team (qb'd by Brock Berlin)... Although I was very proud of that win.

Anyway, UT lost to an 8-5 Auburn team and got hammered by UGA. UT only beat 1 SEC team with a winning record (UF). Even though a 10-2 regular season is nothing to take for granted, when you peel a few layers off the onion you'll see the 2003 record wasn't that impressive. 2004's regular season record was much more impressive with FR qb's (and Rick Clausen) leading the way.

When 10 wins and 3 of them AT Florida, Alabama and Miami are not good then expectations have gone wild. I saw your disclaimer, but still.

Quantity means a lot too. Could you imagine the outrage if Tennessee won it's first 6 conference games then lost their last two?

I know... But I mean we both know we are not gonna make a run at a National Championship this year. We have a shot for the SEC east but that is it. We just have to face facts.

Stranger things have happened:

Quality wins without quantity wins = participation trophy

What are you taking about:

In my eyes not winning the SEC, National Championship or at least the SEC east = participation trophy.

So, get 8 wins however you can...No one will think about it after a few years. All that will noted is that UT went from a losing season to 8+ wins.

Our record out of the State of TN has been absolutley awful the last 4-5 years. The only win that comes to mind is 09 Kentucky.

the last time tennessee has won a football game outside the state of tennessee (with the exception of an overtime win over kentucky in 2009) was the outback bowl win over wisconsin.

I want us to win every game, every year. Unfortunately right now (or at least up to this point) we have not been a very good FB team the last few years.

I think that is about to change very soon, but considering we were 5-7 last year and seemed to give up on a few games, I would say that getting a trophy for participating would be an improvement.

GO VOLS!
