Isn't Urban Meyer the king of text messages? I'm being serious. I heard that he really got that trend started.

He was definitely one of the main ones to use it. Some coaches complained he was in touch with the players too much, but it was just smart recruiting tool and I think its obvious the others just couldn't keep up.

i'd be willing to be half of meyers (or any other coach for that matter) "personal" texts to recruits were sent by unpaid assistants. i've read too many recruits say how they got a message from the coach right after a big win. you think they have time to personally text all the what 30+ guys they are going after every day?

That seemed to be another criticism about it -- that a lot of the texts were actually from asst coaches using the head coach's phone. Not peculiar to Meyer, just a general gripe I read about.

Agreed. Personally, I think if a guy is willing to put in all that effort, he should be allowed to reap his rewards.

Billy Gillespie (UK new B-Ball coach) lives by them. One kid up here had a $500+ phone bill because of it

Well now that would be a reason to ban them. I read some recruit say that for $5 a month he got unlimited so what's the big deal.

What about the kids who have cell phones capable of receiving text messages but don't have texting on their plans? They have to pay for the coaches messages. That puts a different light on the subject.

Is the coach gonna pay the $5?

I doubt it but no kid that talented and shopping major college scholarships for three months is going to genuinely complain about a total of $15 to hear from those schools. At least it would be so uncommon as to be an acceptable problem relative to the improved communication so they choose wisely.

Surely you're not naive enough to know that a fairly large number of D1 prospects come from poor urban families. Somebody has to pay these phone bills.

The biggest complaint is coaches sending txt message having the recruit call them.

Do you really think that they pay their own phone bills?

Bingo. If you're the head coach at a big program, you farm it out to your flunkies. This is about as personal as the email I got from Loren Crabtree this afternoon.

I get annoyed when my wife sends me too many text messages, so I can't even imagine how irritating it must be to be a coveted recruit and have all these coaches beeping your phone all the time. No thanks.
