In his Monday press conference, Saban acknowledges that this game means a lot to a lot of people in Alabama and then says, "it's kind of a rivalry game." In a sense he's right to downplay it. But he's going to see an atmosphere on Saturday that he has NEVER experienced before. His comment is near the 9:30 mark.
No, it doesn't. They probably think it's cute that we tell ourselves stuff like that. Bama has won 15 straight over us and 13 of those have been by at least 14 points.
It's a rivalry in the sense that we've played them for 100+ years, and the cigar tradition and all that, but what makes a true rivalry (IMO) is two teams that hate each other and play so hard, that either team can win. It's competitive more than it's not. If you go back 50 years, Bama is ahead 35-14-1. That isn't what I'd call super competitive.
In a true rivalry game, neither team calls it an automatic W when they look at the schedule. I'm quite sure Bama does that when looking at this game--maybe not this year, but generally speaking.. It's been 15 straight.
I hope we beat the brakes off of them this week 1995 style. But I don't kid myself by saying anything about UT "messes with their heads."
That just read like a ton of whining and excuses.Since you’re framing the rivalry that way, I will frame it another way because I hate your post, even if it is factual. So get ready for the mental gymnastics.
Really, to me, this rivalry comes down to Bryant and Saban being the 2 greatest coaches in CFB history and both coaching at the same school. Alabama has had 27 coaches in their history, as has Tennessee. Tennessee’s record against coaches not named Bryant or Saban is 31-27-6. But those two coaches coached for a long time and just absolutely dominated Tennessee (like every other program they played regularly).
Tennessee’s Athletic Department hiring trash coaches, like not even mediocre ones, literal trash cans has had a lot to do with it as well. I mean, there’s just no way Tennessee should lose 15 straight to anyone. Even Saban’s Alabama. Even with those trash cans coaching UT, we have had a couple chances to win. I would hope that the probability of Alabama hiring another all time great coach in the 20 years after Saban is low and we will see a return to competitive play in this rivalry, as has been the case when Bryant and Saban weren’t coaching them.

Let me be clear....I hate my post too. But that doesn't mean there's not truth in it.
Maybe Neyland and Bryant did circle this game as the biggest of the year. But at one time Army was a big rival to Notre Dame. Time passes, things change.
Since you want to look at it through the lens of "Take away the two best coaches they've had, and it's competitive," let me offer a rebuttal.
If you take away our two best coaches, Neyland and Fulmer, our record against Vandy is 46-29-2.....much more competitive than the 78-33-5 with those two included.
Let's be honest here. Do you look at the Vanderbilt series applying the same "yeah, but..." mental gymnastics you applied to the UT-Bama argument? I doubt it.
Would you take any Vandy fan seriously who posed the same scenario making their case that we should respect them? Do you feel like Vandy is a "respected" rival?
Or do you just shake your head and laugh under your breath when Vandy fans bow up like Scrappy Doo when they occasionally have a decent team?
The point I'm trying to make, is that in my experience with Bama fans (and Florida fans), they look at us like we look at Kentucky and Vandy. The ones I know don't have UT "messing with their heads." Yes, it's dubbed a "rivalry" but we're not genuinely respected. That won't happen until we start handing out ass whoopins of our own. Which I sincerely hope we do.
