I'm not sure how long the Its great to be a TN Vol has been used but my first bowl game was the '91 sugar bowl against Virginia and we were getting blown out at half time. The Vols came back to win it and man to this day it's one of the best memories I have. My dad took me and my little brother. Leaving the superdome and walking back to our hotel every person we saw was shouting "It's great to be a Tennessee Volunteer" over and over. So to me I hope we never stop using it. Just my "two bits" though. Go Vols!

Spot on. I was there and people were walking down the middle of the streets back to the French Quarter chanting. Glorious night.

I feel like it started when I was in college ~2005

It didn't, we were singing it in 89 after the Auburn and Georgia games. I just remember the students singing it, but that didnt mean others weren't singing it. I don't get the constant I want to change UT traditions crap. Has the off season hit us already. Just enjoy the dam game.

I'm not saying the chant is super original or anything, but c'mon. 40+ thousand fans come from all over the country and join in semi-harmony yelling "it's great to be a Tennessee vol" on national TV.

I was at the game and when everyone in Orange joined in and it rung throughout the stadium it was truly awesome!

I say we use "Remember the Alamo!"

Or......we could be really unique and go with

Tora! Tora! Tora!

My wife is not from TN, but she likes the Vols because of being married to me. She has never really gotten into the Vols bigtime, but after seeing the TN-Iowa game and hearing the chant during yesterday's game, she has been singing the "It's Great To Be a Tennessee Vol" chant all last night and this morning.

Music to my ears.

It Is Great To Be a Tennessee Vol.
Boom.

So the answer to your question is:

30+ years ago one of the male cheerleaders would go on the field during pre-game with a Mr Microphone, do the ORANGE... WHITE... ORANGE... WHITE cheer and them start to chant BOOM CHUCK A LUCKA LUCKA... BOOM CHUCK A LUCKA LUCKA. It was... unusual.

It just bothered me when our fans were chanting that during the bowl game. It struck me as people not being able to come up with anything else. Your right, it is a statement of fact though.

People have been chanting that for at least the past 20 years.

People have been chanting that for at least the past 20 years.

Every Friday Night at every high school football game in the country .

This thread is weird to me. It's like a fan base thinking they are the only ones who use the "defense" chant or something.

I have heard it chanted dozens and dozens of times BUT ingrained in my memory is it being chanted ALL the way down the ramps post 98 UF game. Gave me chills after the end of game, fans streaming on field, everyone staying long after the final whistle, and then the crowd down the ramps chanting 'it's great to be a Tennessee Vol'.
