It was 50 years ago today that Bill Anderson and John Ward did their first broadcast

not giving up my age but wasn't Lindsey Nelson the voice of the Vols prior to J.Ward? I just can't quite recall if he was full-time but he moved onto greener pastures with one of the big 3 networks. He was a top-of-the line broadcaster also.
George Mooney was before Ward, and he was very good. I hated to see him go.

I was 17 days away from returning from Viet Nam.

Agree with the poster about George Mooney. He was very good also.

I wish we had better. I'd take Keith but he has a very good gig now.

The descriptive talent they had in painting a picture you could see in your mind play by play was remarkable. Also how they were different yet complimented each others talent.

I recall as a kid I just liked to hear Lindsey Nelson talk. Back in the days of only 3 TV channels, plus a UHF channel that would only come in with the proper amount of aluminum foil on the antenna and the planets being in the correct alignment, the Ara Parseghian Show along with Lindsey Nelson as the moderator, was piped into Knoxville on Sunday mornings. I don't remember whether it aired before of after church, but my mother of all people, a Vols fan herself, saw that I was watching it one Sunday morning and she gave me the business.. I didn't watch it any more, but I remained a fan of Mr. Nelson's and would listen to him any time when it wasn't associated with that school in South Bend.

EDIT: I just realized that I didn't answer your question. Lindsey Nelson was, I believe, the first play-by-play announcer for the Vol Network.

I have incredibly fond memories of going to my uncles house with my dad when I was a young kid and listening to John Ward with the volume off on the tv. Really miss those times.
When I first got to Tennessee and experienced "BIG ORANGE FEVER"...that's how my Loudon, TN girlfriend's Father watched the games.
I'd never seen anything like it, but dang...it sure worked great..!!!
