It took 5 years...

For Saban to succeed at Michigan State. Just sayin... chill out.

I dont know if he ever 'succeeded' in the terms of Vols fans ...he was 9 and 3 his last year.

It was a very similar dynamic , their roster was depleted , and they don't have the regional recruiting and have to pick through UMs left overs

Even the GOAT looked like a DA at several points that season

But you are putting butch on saban's level so that's not a good example. 2 different levels

Thats the point to ponder. There was a time when Saban was not Saban. It took him 6 recruiting cycles at MSU to get to 9-3. Then he goes to recruiting meccas and is an instant hit . But to be objective , all of these years of number 1 recruiting classes ...and he is only working on his 2nd undefeated season.

I would say that UT is not a recruiting mecca compared to Alabama . UT has not recruit nationally and has historically had mixed results. Would any coach have instant success here ? I think it will take about 6 recruiting cycles ...just like it did for Nick at MSU

Putting Tennessee and Michigan State in the same recruiting category is ridiculous

Butch at CMU: 27-14

Butch at Cincy: 23-14

Butch Here: 29-21

insanity: Do the same thing, hope for a different result.

By this logic, if every team in America keeps their coach for 5 years, who would get the championship?

No. But if you look at virtually every great coach ...then take a look at some of the solid coaches. Even go all the way back to the General. You will see years of struggle , sometimes a little struggle ...sometimes alot ....followed by their great success. Bowden , Holtz, Joe, Saban , Osborne, Fulmer, Neyland , Spurrier ...the fans all had to put up with some tough times to get to the good times ...which were often short lived.

If every team fires their coach within 5 years ...will there ever be any great coaches again ?

Probably never. No coach could ever succeed with all the meanie fans out there.

Spurrier was 7-3-1 at Duke in year 2 and then 10-2 at Florida--10 wins for the first time in school history--in year 2 as well. That's struggle?

Its really not when you consider that at that time 2000-2004 they were higher ranked than us in recruiting after they came off of probation. I think we are currently at 11 they are at 18. They have no instate recruiting cause of their big sister , we have no instate recruiting for a number of reasons. There conference is typically dominated by two teams historically other than them ...same deal in the SEC. There roster was depleted due to probation..ours because of 3 different coaches and attrition..

A very similar landscape indeed.

With the right coach, it can be. We've seen it in the late 90s early 00s.

You are correct ...riding Mannings success and a NC. LSU and Bama could field entire teams higher ranked than all but a few with instate recruits if they chose too. We are not in the ball park of that.

Manning , by all accounts , was a great recruiter
