There's alot left in this season. Alot left to play for and a few good changes could lead us to 10-2, maybe the SECCG and a great bowl game...

BUT...and I know this has been discussed before...think about what we are setting up for next year. I mean...look at this line up...

Offense

QB: Crompton/Coleman (this will be a nice battle to watch)

RB: Foster/Coker/Creer

TE: Cottam's/Stocker

WR's: Taylor/Rogers (dependable) Paige/O'Neal/Jones/Moore (vertical threats)

O-line: Scott/McClendon/Richard/McNeil/Johnson...

Kicker: Lincoln

Defense

DE: Martin/Ayers

DT: Bolden/Williams/Brimfield/Langley...

LB: McCoy/Mayo/McKenzie

DB: Berry/Johnson/Vinson/Willingham...

Punter: Colquitt

Maybe this is a lousy time to bring it up...but I bring this to the table because I think it starts now...with UGA.

Assuming the same coaching staff will be here next season (because we don't know otherwise yet)...the run for something great next year starts now. If we make the needed changes from an execution, play calling, and attitude standpoint this year then we end with a respectable season that sets us up for a great run next year.

If we don't then it could end up being a waste of a great team next year. I say this because even if we brought in the best coach available he inevitably would have a transition season to start with. And I think this transition would coincide with and therefore waste a very talented team..

So...IMO...IT ALL STARTS NOW!!!

Maybe that team could even stay within 30 points of the Gators.

Except that oh yeah, UF's freshman and sophomores will all have another year of experience, and Meyer will have a whole new crop of outstanding freshman to add into the mix too. There's no reason to think next year will be much different.

That is really the question that most of the "sunshine pumpers" (to borrow a phrase) refuse to answer. I cannot think of anything at all that I will see this year that will make me think this team will be able to compete with Florida next year.

I don't even mean to be overly negative about it; it just is what it is. I think we have a reasonable chance to win some conference games this year against the other also-rans, but the gap between us and Florida is so huge and yawning that it barely matters who we have coming back next year.

If there was a way to reason around it, the argument would have been made already. It is just the cold hard truth.

that's fair, and i've said on more than one occaision that having a bunch of average young players this year likely just means that you'll just have older average players next year.

but i guess it depends on how much stock you put in to last year's class. i do think getting some of these guys involved now will help in the future, and you still have guys like Chris Donald and Ben MArtin and others that really have to to make any significant contribution. same with some of the WR's.

in this case, since it is a full year away from happening, and i'm such a bad mood about this year's results so far, i'll have to say that better days are ahead, from a talent and experience standpoint. so i'll agree with the thread originator for now that it will get better. how much better...well that depends on what kind of decisions are made this off season.

A football team can be turned around 180 degrees with 90% of the same talent in one year. It all depends on who the coach is which 180 degree turn it makes.

Reference Bruce Pearl first year, basketball I know.

I would feel much better about last year's class if a few more of those guys were already on the field. That is yet another great source of displeasure for me.

That's why they play the games gentlemen. Make no mistake - the sun is shinning on UF right now (no pun intended) - but it will eventually go down.

There are numerous examples - UT included - of teams that look completely dominate that fall flat on their face.

UF is on a roll, but my prognostication is that they will fall to the same bug that got UT several years ago - complacency. Mix in some drug and gun charges with some "all we have to do is show up" attitude - and wham-o.

It would be one thing if it were just Florida -- i.e., something like "Urban Meyer, Super Genius and Recruiting Superman, times Florida's in-state talent equals everyone else playing for second place until he leaves." But it's not. We got blown away on both sides of the ball by Arkansas. We got easily handled by Cal. A crappy Penn State team beat us by basically running it between the tackles 40 times. We're 16-12 since the 2005 season began. We've got a lot of stuff to address before we can even think about competing with UF regularly again.

according to IE, FL has a lot to do for them to fall back to us.:birgits_giggle: so my advice to FL....get to work!

I like the optimism, and part of me wishes that I still shared more of it. But there's just too much evidence piled up the other way these days. Being optimistic about where this team is headed requires a larger suspension of disbelief than I'm apparently capable of.

here let me answer my own ? we will most likely set Coker for most of every game and not give him a chance to shine because arian can run all over our D in the off season

What I think...as I stated originally...is if it's going to happen it has to start with this next game. We have to make a run and finish this season out on a positive note to set the tone for next year....

Now here is the kicker...I don't believe it's going to happen

1st...I don't think Fulmer has what it takes to turn this season around on a whim. I think the rest of the season will play out like the first month. I don't think anyone else on the scheduel will blow us away like UF or Cal but I think that every decent team will exploit our weak D and it will be up to our offense to outscore them. At best I see 3-2 against USC, UK, UGA, Bama, Arky...at the very best

2nd...If Fulmer miraculously turns this season around and we win out....based off of experience we will see the same complacency to start next season as we've seen almost every year recently. And UF will stomp us regardless because they are head and shoulders better than us in every facet of the game now

3rd...If this season turns even further south and we end up at say...4-8, 5-7...Fulmer won't get fired because he seemingly owns Hamilton. He will have to step down. If he is man enough to step down then...like I said earlier...even the best coach out there would have to establish his own regime which would take at least a year and in the process next years talented team would be wasted.

I've always considered myself an optimist but I also think I'm a realist. In the past I've always believed...despite what others have been preaching...that the glass was half full when it came to our football team. But I'm starting to believe the sky is falling and the future doesn't look too bright for us...

Maybe I'm just in a bad mood or something :dunno:

In short, next season we will have very good talent on each side of the ball and some experience. But, will our current coaching staff be able to make it productive?

I agree with you that we are setting up to have better talent in our first 22 than any other team in the SEC except UF and LSU next year. I am tired of seeing it wasted though.
