It’s time. A Kesling thread

I'm going to disagree. Bob is a VFL who loves the program. I hear comments on this board about his lack of excitement, not calling ball position on field, not calling down and distance, clock time. I've listened to recent live game broadcasts while traveling with these comments in mind and I just disagree. His archive of calls also have exciting calls. He's not one to scream at the mic; and I don't like that screaming style anyway. I think this is more about personal taste than mechanics of the calls.

Whatever the future holds, I'd prefer not "SAAAAAAACK".

No one questions this. It also has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not he's good at his job. Im a VFL who loves the program too. That doesnt mean I'm fit to be behind the microphone. I agree with the OP. Its time for a change.

I completely agree. No Mike Keith for me.

I wish Kentucky's play by play announcer Mike Leach or Louisville play by play announcer Paul Rogers called the Tennessee football games
Not familiar with those guys, but im all too familiar with Mike Keith and I just dont care for his screaming at all. I dont like Kesling, but I believe I would keep him over Keith.

Bob isn’t that bad and gets exited when UT makes a play. My only criticism is that he gets exited when the opponent makes a playas well.

I have a feeling that Bob may retire from calling football games after Tennessee's trip to possibly the Orange Bowl and just call Tennessee Men's Basketball games.

He seems to get more excited when Tennessee's opponents make big plays and he tries his best to build up Tennessee's opponents on Big Orange Hotline.

Some of you all really need to expand your life experiences and venture out of your little East Tennessee bubble if you think Bob is that bad. Had the UNC basketball game on driving home to Charlotte. You want to talk about missed action, whoo boy.

I am not for making any changes because what ever you do half of Volnation will always be critical and can never be satisfied.

Agreed with you right up till the shade thrown at Mike Keith. You do realize that had the Oilers not moved Mike would be the voice of the Vols. But you are right it's personal taste but I love Mike Keith.

Keith is the best announcer in this state in any sport since John Ward. And it isn't close.

But since he's not an option, I'd like to see John Wilkerson get it.

Going to be tough for anyone living in John Ward’s shadow. He was the absolute best
I wonder if anyone said the same thing when our own Lindsey Nelson left for the big city. We found competent announcers thereafter and can do it again.

your point about me "throwing shade" on Mike taken. Not my best moment on this board. Let me just say I am not a fan of screaming play by play. Bob gets kicked a lot for lack of enthusiasm in his calls. I disagree and like his style.

I don’t think criticism and “throwing shade” are the same thing.

Um…. I think it’s up to Bob when he decides to leave. You just don’t cancel somebody because “it’s time to bring in some new blood and energy”. Bob is not Larry Munson. Bob is a professional announcer that displays class and does it his way. It’s fine if you’re not a fan of him but you don’t start calling for his job for not enjoying his broadcasts. Your boss may not like they you do your job but you’ve probably got bills and a family to feed. I’ll tell ya, people these days 🤦🏼‍♂️.

Honestly I don't know. Siri tells me throwing shade is a "subtle, sneering expression of contempt for or disgust with someone"

Not what I was doing. There's no disgust or contempt. It's not personal. Just don't like Mikes style... my opinion.

Kesling's biggest problem is he calls the game like everyone is watching it on TV. He is apparently not capable of painting a picture or making even the greatest plays sound exciting ("what a turn of events"). UTSports needs to quit making a highlight video using the Vol Network as the announcing. Kesling's call of the long TD runs were quite possibly the worst descriptions of big plays in the history of the Vol Network. Zero emotion or details about those plays.

There have been some occasions where I have listened to the Vol Network while in the car. He doesn't give down and distance or time left in a quarter, and he calmly talks about a pass downfield that ends up being a 40 yd gain. He is bad, he is dull but he is our's and he ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

Agreed . . . Kesling isn't an iconic voice, but he's loyal and he's a pro. I actually sometimes felt the same way about Ward. He was a better play by play guy, but he used to drive me crazy being behind the action and just being awkward at times. Bob is actually better on the Sunday morning show than Ward was. The Fulmer/Majors show had a cringe element that just wouldn't stop lol.

Yes, he is an incredible gentleman and represents the University with class. His performance, however, leaves a lot to be desired. I had to run out on Saturday for a minute and happened to be in the car for one of our long touchdown runs in the 2nd half. It sounded like a routine 3 yard gain as excited as he was. You don't have to be an over-the-top homer, but excitement is not against the rules. I think Mike Keith and Coach Mac are the best duo going. Appropriate excitement, criticism, and play well off each other. Tim Priest at least masked some things with Bob, but Pat just adds another monotone listless voice. I don't think Bob is going anywhere. I think upgrading the color analyst would go a long way towards improving the product. I have long thought that it would be fun to have different VFLs take a game or 2 each season. We have plenty of available candidates that I think would love that opportunity. Ramon Foster and J. Swain I think would jump at it. I know Witten was bad on tv, but I think he would do great on radio for a game. Heck...throw whatever you need to get Peyton to come in to do color for the Bama game. It's just one game a year. I think you could get a lot of interest/excitement for those broadcasts.
