Issue with Permanent Captians

One of the reason this team is suffering is because most of the leaders and captains are done for the year.

This means in the locker room you have your leaders less focused on the game than the other guys. They don't have to get as focused or hyped up for the game.

Their mind is on what they can control - coaching, mentoring, and preparing for the next level. There isn't anything wrong with that - except for the fact - that none of it translates to on the field leadership.

Danny O Brian was an on the field leader. You could see the team respond to him.

Derek Barnett is an on the field leader

JRM was

Sutton was

Dobbs used to be but he's lost it. I don't know why or what happened. But it's gone.

Hurd used to get fired up but he doesn't anymore.

We saw this issue in offense during the VT game when a backup QB had to be the vocal leader for the offense. That's a problem.

It's not as if they aren't in the locker room or the sidelines. They're still on the team.

If a player has to have the title of "captain" to be an on-field leader, then we're doing it wrong.

Attitude reflects leadership, captain...

I agree 1000%...while permanent captains sounds cool...a position of on the field leadership MUST be fluid...if the "leader" is not doing his job or is doing halfway, he needs replaced...and that needs to come within the team from his teammates to build strength and unity.

It's a symbolic award for achievement that meets expectations. Guys like JJ and DB need to be placed on a pedestal for the rest of the team to understand the target expectations.

Wrong message sending imo.
What has happened in the past is in the past,you gotta go out prove you belong where you are every day if you want to be the best!
Symbolic achievement awards should be only given to former players who have moved on
